Dear MEOW... 2005
|
December 31, 2005
Hello MEOW,
What prompts our e-mail was when Russell bought the 2006 MEOW Foundation calendar. We had no idea that Mojo (MEOW name Riko) was going to be "Mr. November"! I was so excited to see such an adorable picture of him and his wonderful story in there.
Mojo is doing great! He couldn't be better. He was doing fine on his own but when I decided to accept a promotion at work, which would mean a full time position, we decided that he could probably use some companionship. So now Mojo has a best buddy named Beanz. He is the light brown tabby in the pictures with Mojo. They do absolutely everything together! Mojo's coat has turned into a shiny jet black and he still instantly purrs upon human contact. Here are some pictures, I hope you enjoy them.
... Thanks for doing such a wonderful job of loving our dear Mojo, I'm sure that's the reason he is such a fabulous furry friend today.
Love,
Melanie, Russ, Mojo and Beanz |

Dear MEOW,
"SYLVAN'S STORY"
I was rescued from under a cabin in Sylvan Lake with my mom and two sisters when I was about 14 weeks old. My mom and sisters were caught first but I was stubborn and held out for an additional 24 hours, much to my rescuer's worry. Was my mom ever happy to finally see me; she was very worried and let my rescuer know it.
My entire family was very scared and wary of our rescuer as we had no human contact at all and my mom had been a stray for sometime. We were classified as feral or extremely shy cats. We were very lucky, as our rescuer was a volunteer for the MEOW Foundation. Our kind benefactor (although we didn't think so at the time) spent many hours trying to get us to play with her. We quickly realized that it was nice being inside without concerns for the cold weather and where we were going to get our next meal, although we still weren't too sure of these things called humans.
I was adopted to a new home in January. It took me awhile to get used to being away from my mom and siblings and to the new human and felines of the house. My new human spent hours in my room with me trying to get me used to her. It took me days before I would come out of my hidey hole in the scratching post to even look at her let alone come anywhere close to her. When she wasn't around though I sure liked to play under the door with the cats of the house.
A few months later I'm still wary of the human of the house and will run from her when she's up and moving around, although I'm not as scared of her anymore and no longer hiss whenever she gets too close. I've also watched my feline roommates and realized that they really like this thing they call petting. I have decided when my human is still in bed or on the couch and is fairly still, it's okay to go over and get a good petting - I'll even allow her to put me in her lap and to rub my belly and ears. I quite enjoy that.
I have two close friends named Sundance and Binks (former MEOW cats) who let me wrestle with them and follow them all over the house like their little shadow. Binks will also hold me down every now and then and give me a good bath and Sundance will let me curl up and sleep with him. Our human calls us the three white-nose musketeers. The two female felines of the house are a little older, but I respect that they aren't into playing with me as much as the other two and leave them be.
My mom and one sister are still with the MEOW Foundation being socialized into recognizing that these humans aren't as bad as we first thought. I know that they'll eventually find good homes like the one I did.
Thanks MEOW Foundation for not giving up on shy guys like me and my family.

Dear MEOW,
Just wanted to let you know how our little adoptee is doing. It's been just over a year now that Mia (MEOW name Jetta Bug) has been with us.
We are delighted to have her around, especially her great friend, Genny, (shown in the picture, to the right of Mia).
They are so close, it's hard to believe they didn't grow up together. Right from the start, Genny assumed we had gotten the kitten for him, and in turn, Mia believes he is her property.
The other two cats don't figure in the picture, as far as Mia and Genny are concerned.
Hope you have a Merry Christmas,
Ruth |

Dear MEOW,
I have now adopted Jazmine (MEOW name Celica) and she is doing very well. We are bonding more every day.
Jazmine quite enjoys her new toys, her "private" house, roommates that play with her every day and she has a new kitty friend named Nala. Day by day she is coming out of her shell and has made miraculous headway.
Attached are a couple of the pictures of Jazmine lounging on the bed and one in her house. She is recovering well from her surgery and is playing and jumping again.
Thank you so much for helping me to adopt my little one. She has been an amazing addition to my life.
Have a great Christmas!

Dear MEOW,
It's Elwood and Zoey's anniversary today and look how big they have gotten in just one year.
Zoey (MEOW name Barbie) is on the left and Elwood is on the right. Before this picture was taken, Elwood was actually sleeping on top of Zoey. It's the only way they can both fit in this bed.
We love them soooo much!! We thank you for all you guys do with MEOW Foundation. If it wasn't for people like you, we wouldn't have two wonderful furballs that bring smiles to our faces everyday!!
All the best to you and your families in 2006.
Cheers

Dear MEOW Foundation:
I had meant to send this on the year anniversary of receiving Mo-Zee & Charlotta (MEOW names) into my life but the year just seemed to whiz past so fast that here it is Christmas and I am finally getting around to it.
My two girls are doing great! Mo-Zee has finally started to grow this past summer but to me she is still my little girl. She was 3 lbs when I adopted her and is now up to 8 lbs. Her little stature doesn't stop her from instigating most of the wrestling matches that happen in my living room, though. Even though Charlotta has always out-weighed her by 4 lbs, Mo-Zee just about always starts the games! She is my little lap cat and would spend all day sleeping there if she had the opportunity. Sometimes, when I get home from work and get busy tidying up, she'll "talk" to me in her little squeaky way until I sit down at which point she immediately jumps up onto my lap and flops down with a big sigh. At night she likes to sit on her perch in front of the living room window and watch to see if anything exciting happens. Early in the morning, she makes her way up to bed and crawls under the covers to snuggle up to for a sleep.
Charlotta is my fearless girl. A closed door is something to sit and cry at until it's opened or she realizes that it just isn't going to happen. A box is something to jump into just in case there is something in there to play with. An open cupboard has to be hiding something interesting. Charlotta is always looking up to see where she can go to get up as high as possible. The top of my curio cabinet is one of her favourite spots. Now she has figured out how to jump from the countertop, to the top of the fridge and then up onto the cupboards. She knows that Mo-Zee won't follow her so I think it's kind of like a little get-a-way sometimes. This summer Charlotta started laying on top of me sometimes when I'm on the couch. Even though she's not much of a lap cat, she does like to be in the same room with me but it is still special when she decides to cuddle. When I go to bed at night, she always comes with and spends all night at my feet. Well, except for the few times that Mo-Zee teases her and starts the "catch me if you can" race around the house!
I am attaching a few pictures to show you how beautiful they have turned out to be. For the past month and a half, they have been down in Weyburn, SK, where they have been staying with my parents until I fly home for Christmas. I took them home at the end of October and stayed for a week and a half until they were settled in their new surroundings. What good little travelers they turned out to be. They are getting lots of lap time between both my parents and apparently Charlotta is becoming very much a lap cat now. I can't wait to see them again! It has been very quiet in my house without them.
Keep up the good work that you do!

Hi Everyone at MEOW!
I just wanted to let you all know that Devani has settled beautifully into our home. She is now known as "Princess Devani" and lives up to her regal name in every way! She is such a diva! Reno (our first MEOW boy) is absolutely head over heels in love with her and follows her everywhere, chirping and chatting to get her attention. Of course she loves the attention but isn’t about to let him know that!
Within 2 days she had full run of the house and her integration with Reno, Keiffer (the golden retriever) and Callie and Blaine (the kids) was an absolute non-event! There was never a sign of fear or aggression – it was amazing!
She is a little love-bug, who seeks out attention, allows everyone to pet her, and is into everything. Yesterday morning as she was coaxing my husband and I out of bed to feed her breakfast, we actually heard her purring and she has been purring ever since!
Thank you for our little "Princess". My daughter (5) and son (2) adore her and once again we found the perfect cat for our family through MEOW.
Cheers, Libby |

Dear MEOW,
I am writing to let you know I am so happy in my new home and very spoiled to. My coat is looking beautiful as my mom grooms me nearly every night. I am also starting to loose a few pounds as I play alot with my toys and I am also on Science Diet. I have a huge queen size bed that my mom and dad think is theirs but it didn't take me long to discover there is lots of room for me and my brother Muttley in there as well. I hope my friends at the MEOW, less fortunate than me, are able to find loving homes in the New Year as well.
My mom thanks Doug very much for being a great co-ordinator and keeps him updated with pictures.
Merry Christmas to all my friends who looked after me and to my feline friends who are still there. Hope 2006 is a "purrrfect" year for everyone.
Love, Asia |

Hi friends at MEOW,
This is Nicklebee. On behalf of the other MEOW alumni here, I just wanted to wish all my friends at MEOW a very Happy Holiday season. I really like my new home and hope to make it official soon. (I hear I have to be "neutered" first in order to do that. I don't know what that is, but I hope it comes along really quickly.) I just wanted to let you know that I have fit in really well with all of the other kitties here. My bestest friends are Karma and Benson (MEOW name Kit). They are showing me the ropes of living here. We also like to wrestle a lot. I also like my 18 year old sister, Foggy. I curl up next to her and we sleep together in a MEOW bed. Jet and Tori ( MEOW foster cat Victoria) like me now too, although that took a little bit longer. And I have even gotten used to the big dogs! They don't scare me like they used to. I can now walk right up to them and sniff noses with them. I just wanted you all to know that things are going well, and that I really like my new home. I hope that all the other cats and kittens get a new home soon too.
Love, Nic (That is what my name is now)
P.S. The picture is of Karma and me having a nap. |

To all my friends at MEOW,
I just wanted to let you know how much fun I am having in my new home! Even though I miss all my friends at MEOW I am having a good time sleeping in my new queen-sized bed (my owner Tracy thinks it is hers, but whatever), eating various types of fruit (turns out in addition to pears, I really haven't come across any fruit that I don't like - I LOVE raspberries especially!), and trying out the laps of anyone who will sit still for me! I am glad some of my friends have found homes, and I'm especially glad to have found mine!
Love Louie
MEOW - Thank you for helping me find the BEST CAT EVER!

Dear MEOW,
My husband and daughter met some of your volunteers at the Glenmore Landing Safeway last weekend who remembered Clarita (later renamed to Carlita), our adoptee from 18 months ago.
So we thought we'd send an update and a few pictures.
Carlita was initially shy and a little fearful, especially with Jessie our 60-lb Australian Shepherd cross dog in the house. She soon progressed from hissing to cautious avoidance to reluctantly sharing space to studied indifference, and finally to playful tail-swiping and a big greeting when Jessie comes in the house.
Jessie is ok with all of this, and will herd Carlita away from the door when asked to, as Carlita has made several successful escapes outside to the corner of the house before deciding she really prefers watching from her window (which is ALL the windows in the house).
She's developed into a very friendly and cuddly member of the family who likes helping (battling) with the newspaper and the mail and is intensely curious about everything anyone is doing - as long as we don't interrupt one of her frequent naps. These naps are taken anywhere and everywhere including sofas, beds, desktops, and in or on any box or boxlike container she can find, although the living room sofa in front of the picture window seems to be her favourite spot to sleep and keep on eye on the neighborhood.
Thanks to all the volunteers at MEOW who helped us with adding Carlita to our family, and for the wonderful work you do.

Dear MEOW,
I am finally sending some photos of Valerie (now Kali).
Kali continues to amaze me with her wonderful personality and her little quirks. She's a happy cat who purrs a lot and talks to me constantly. We have great conversations! Her coat is soft and shiny, and she is very solid now and weighs about 8 pounds - a far cry from the sad, starved little cat found by MEOW. Kali is venturing out into the house more and more. She has liked the safety of her room and ours down the hall, but now comes out into the rest of the house with me and is getting braver each day.
In the morning when I'm working in my office in the basement, Kali can be heard running down the hallway overhead looking for me. A quick "I'm down here" brings her down to spend time with Abbie and I. She and Abbie are becoming friends, although she finds it hard to totally trust Abbie. Abbie is very patient and likes to check on Kali frequently to make sure she is okay.
Kali has a great variety of cat beds to choose from and likes to make nests in them by arranging things so that she has a cozy, enclosed spot to sleep. She also likes the option of moving from bed to bed and creatively arranging them. Along with this she has a propensity to sharpen her claws, shredding anything under them. We are in the process of looking for a cat tree with a good scratching post to minimize destruction!!
I have to say Kali is a good influence on me - she likes to just sit in my lap or on my legs or on my body somewhere if I am lying down. She helps me to remember that it is important to just "be", and to have some quiet time each day with a someone who helps me schedule in that reflective time.
Thank you for bringing Kali into our lives!!!
Cheers, Barb |

Dear MEOW,
It has been almost 16 months since Jeremy (MEOW name McLavity) joined our family. Although he arrived when the house was in upheaval due to massive restoration work, he adapted to his new home very quickly and found his place among his four new cat companions.
In truth, my two senior cats, Smudge and Foxy only tolerate him (the most generous they are with any cat) but my two younger cats Callie and Tigger have accepted him as their play- and nap-mate. They chase each other up and down the stairs and then settle down for group siestas on a regular basis.
Jeremy is a very affectionate young fellow with a strong sense of responsibility. Whenever one of his companions is loaded into a carrier for a trip to the vet, Jeremy will join in their howls, calling for reinforcements to come free the Unfortunate One. He is also very diligent about standing guard at the kitchen window to warn me when another cat dares to enter HIS yard.
We thought at the time of his adoption that Jeremy might remain a small cat for a male, but it soon became apparent that he had other plans. Now a solid 13 lbs, he has filled out and developed a thick, glossy coat, as you can see.
If you haven't already picked up on it, we are delighted to have Jeremy as part of our family. Thank you.

Dear MEOW,
As you know my name is Patricia (MEOW name) but Mum calls me Tish.
MEOW took me and my kids in and gave me a warm bed and a very nice place to hang out till I got My Mum. Little did I know that sitting on a barking box at my foster home (this was Lucy in her kennel, more about her later) would get me a home with a crazy dog and My Mum.
I am still playful and I like to play with My Mum’s comb and to help her as she does puzzles on the computer. I also like laser lights to chase.
I can tell you what I don’t like. I do not like to have a bath. Luckily, I got one only once, while my sister gets one every week.
Oh yes my sister Lucy .... She is a dog, a Yorkie, and she’s ok. She chases me sometimes but not long before Mum say "off and play nice." Mum takes Lucy to work so I have the house to myself and watch the world go by on the perch she made for me with my special blanket on it.
Lucy is pretty protective. The one time I got to go outside, she never left my side and even kissed me a few times. Yuck dog kisses. I got to roll around in the dirt and not have a bath after it, way cool.

I did get into a little trouble once, see my sister opened up the catnip container for me and well I kinda got stoned.
I like my home and my family and I am a spoiled rotten cat.
Thank you all at MEOW and especially my foster family that kept me safe till my Mummy came to love me.
I have included some pictures so you can see me on my harness and hanging out with my sister Lucy. I also thought I would throw in one other photo of me just looking cute.

Dear MEOW,
Well, we’ve just passed our six month anniversary so I thought you’d like to know how my two boys are enjoying life. For starters, they’re both on diet food!
Yes, O.G. (MEOW name Richard) and Tag (MEOW name Avignon) have me wrapped around their furry little and not-so-little paws and Tag thinks he has me trained into action when he sits by the food cupboard. Temptations, Greenies, or even some deli turkey meat are all acceptable to these two buddies. I think you’d really be amazed to see how they’re doing, especially O.G., as they do know this is home. They tried out the balcony this summer – only with me right there – and discovered that although it was okay to go and smell the flowers (or taste them), they’d rather be inside, secure.
Their first night here, as told, I made them sleep in a "safe room", even though Tag had already decided he should explore the rest of the apartment. The next day, both were out and finding the best places for sunbeams. That night I was amazed to find both of them on my bed! Oh, I give all the credit to Tag. He is a kind, patient and gentle giant who really isn’t afraid of much and he is always showing O.G. that people can be good (treats, pats, toys). Of course, O.G. wasn’t too sure as he hissed whenever I walked by, unless I gave him warning first, and would even hiss before he reached out to snag a treat, but the hissing has stopped unless he's startled. Tag would always look distressed whenever he heard the hissing and would hustle right over to make sure that things were okay. He always seemed to be surprised to see that there really wasn't anything to fuss about and then O.G. would look embarrassed. Tag also has shown O.G. how to play and I often catch O.G. making a move just like Tag's. Tag always starts the playing with me, then O.G. "happens by" and jumps in, and they proceed to take turns, even playing tennis with some of the balls. Of course, their favourite games happen in the middle of the night: roll the balls down the stairwell; play tag across/ under/ around my bed; wrestle across the bed; and stare at me to see if I really am asleep or will wake up for pats. They also love to wrestle with each other, then get into competitive bathing, wrestle some more, bathe, and finally nap. Unfortunately, their MEOW beds just aren't quite big enough to get all of both of them in, although they sure try!
O.G. gets pats in the morning and at night when I'm in bed, although he happens to walk by when I'm reading to see if a hand might happen to come down for a scratch. He is also accepting my lap for longer and longer times – we're almost at 5 minutes! – when I'm on the sofa watching T.V. which he also enjoys doing. Tag is my cuddler. If I'm sitting, he asks to be picked up - for chin-rubs, ear-rubs, face rubs - but he really loves to stretch full out on the floor and invite a full-body massage. Friends know that they had better be prepared to give this big guy some attention when they stop by!
Yes, we’re getting comfortable with each other. O.G. still retreats under my bed if he feels nervous, and Tag may start there to make sure O.G. is okay when company arrives, but they do want to be where the action is, even if I'm only working at my desk. So, there you have it. That nervous, freaked out Richard is turning into a real bossy cuddle monster, and Tag plays the innocent one, assuring me that they’re going to starve to death – NOW! However, I'm trying to be more firm as I realize I want this duo around for a long time so I need to get them to a good wrestling weight. (Have you tried to cart two 17-lb cats to the vet's?) I've attached a couple of pictures to show my dynamic duo. (Tag is the tabby.)
When my marvellous Max (a StreetCats alumnus) died last year, I was inconsolable. However, I'm glad that I decided to open up my home and my heart to cats again. As everyone else says, truthfully, "Thanks, MEOW, for giving me the perfect cats." Maybe you should try human match-making when your results are this good!
Sincerely,
Carole, Seamus McTaggert, O.G. (Other Guy) One Catnobi |

Dear MEOW,
From the start Riley (MEOW name Kriti) adapted really well to her new home. She is very playful and loves to eat and tells me when it's time to do both. She is quite vocal at times.
Her favorite toys are torn boxes, a shoe lace on a stick, and a laser pointer. There must be obstacles in her way as she gets bored easily when playing. Fortunately I had bolster pillows I wasn't using and now they are part of her playthings.
She really is quite affectionate. Upon waking or when I get home, she rolls over and it's tummy rub time (I think she started doing this within 4 days). She loves it and pulls herself along the carpet and keeps rolling over and over purring away.
Although she is not a lap cat (one can always hope) she likes to curl up beside me on the couch or at the foot of my bed and fall asleep. She is starting to let me pet her for a longer periods of time and doesn't immediately bolt when I pull her to my lap or hold her. I think we are at about 45 seconds now :o)
When she wants me to wake up, she climbs on the back of my pillow and or gets right in my face and stares at me. She sleeps through the night or is at least very quiet which is a blessing.
I got her claws clipped and it went better then expected. I don't think I will have a problem doing it myself as she has had no problem with me handling her paws.
She is generally well behaved and doesn't really get into anything she shouldn't. At first I was a bit worried when she had her first terror-run-around (as I call it) and I was really freaked out. But they have since calmed down and don't last as long, and now I just find them humorous.
Thanks and take care,
Susan |

Dear MEOW,
Here are the pictures of the boys - Sunset, Somerset and Griffy! The boys are doing awesome. Sunny and Sommer really look out for Griffy and they are all doing amazing with the people who come here, always sitting in their laps.
The first photo shows how they always sleep together in a bunch of kittens (although Sunny's nose appears to be in Griffy's mouth during this snooze).
The second photo shows how much they love their new scratching post - lots of room for three kittens.
And the last photo is to show how smart Sunny is working on the computer.
Eric and I love them so much and are so happy we have them. So excited for when they are officially ours!

Dear MEOW,
Hello ... I adopted Sammy (MEOW name Zorba) In January 2004 and I just wanted to let all know that she is doing fabulous. We moved back home to Winnipeg a month ago and brought Sammy with us. She's settling in well.
Compared to when we first brought her home her personality is quite comical. She certainly lets you know when she wants something, especially food. We recently changed her diet to a new product called Snappy Tom. It is actual fish like salmon, tuna and whitebait in a gelatin base fortified with vitamins, no meat bi-products, all natural. Since then she hasn't been coughing up hair balls or retching at all. Her coat is amazingly shiny and no dandruff. I certainly recommend it. It's a little pricy but it's worth it. Anyway here are a few pics of the move. As you can see she loves boxes!
Thank you so much for a special kitty like Sammy. Actually she responds really well to Boo Boo, that's her nick name!

Honouring Feral Cat Day - Sunday, October 16, 2005
Dear MEOW,
This is RHEA my feral kitty. She had been a feral for about 4 years and had several litters of kittens before being trapped by MEOW volunteers. Rhea had no human contact, and was very sick. Being in the shelter for a very short time, we adopted her. Now after 16 months with us, Rhea can be handled and cuddled. She is not a lap cat, but gets along with our other kitties very well.
So I would like to let other people know that feral kitties are adoptable.

Dear MEOW,
It has been well over a year since we adopted VIXEN (Happy Ending Nov. 2004) from MEOW Foundation, and she is such a joyful addition to our family. She had three strikes against her when we saw her story in the "Neighbors" paper - she was a black cat, with long hair and quite shy. We decided right then that we had to have her.
Although she is still shy when new people come into the house, she warmed up to our family and cat-mate,Bree,within days. I think she knew we were "cat people".
I was just looking at your Happy Endings (web) page recently and decided that the attached picture was perfect as a signpost for "happy endings" - here's hoping you agree!! Just so you see they are both content cats, I have attached a "front view" as well!!
Hopefully you can include this tale (tail?) in your Dear MEOW stories.

Dear MEOW,
Jasper (MEOW name Burbie) truly is a treasure to our family and Calypso seems SO much happier! ... Jasper plays with her toys, or her tail, or the cardboard box (and laundry basket) she likes to jump into, or hiding under a stair waiting for someone to pass to ambush, or the tub (even the sink) when the water is running she is amused with!
Thanks again for all your help! Heaven forbid Calypso takes leave of us, but should it happen we will be in touch with the MEOW Foundation again! Our experience was EXCELLENT! You truly were the best!
Warm regards,
Barbara |

Dear MEOW,
I'm writing to thank the MEOW Foundation for the latest love of my life.
I was committed to the idea of adopting a kitten friend for my Jakkob when I went to view the available cats, but I saw Mordechai (MEOW name Larch) and it was a case of love at first sight. I only saw him streak across the room, but I knew instantly that I would take him home, especially after my adoption counsellor told me about him and his story.
Morty was a very shy cat who had spent most of his life in the shelter. Getting him to his new home was far too much an ordeal for him. After a very clever escape from the carrier he had been put in, he was re-caught and the carrier was duct-taped to ensure his safe arrival. When he arrived at my house, he had soiled the carrier because he was so nervous.
Following the instructions I was given by MEOW, I had set up my room as the "safe room", with food and litter. Poor, scared little Morty lived under my bed for a month. For the first few days, he would not eat or move. I managed to get him to accept some hand-fed salmon and tuna, and gradually introduced him to kibble. I went out and bought a feather wand similar to the one I'd seen at MEOW and used it to gently interact with him - first by moving it slowly and speaking to him, and eventually progressing to pets. Soon he started coming out of my room and discovered his brother, my little Siamese, Jakkob.
After that first month, Morty and Jakkob were inseparable pals. One night, Jakkob came to sleep in my room as usual, but my door was accidentally closed. I awoke to the sound of Morty crying at the door because he couldn't figure out where Jakkob was.
Funnily enough, Morty warmed up to my roommate first, who is male. The first pets came from Lucas, the first begs for attention. Gradually he came to trust us, and started hanging out in the living room, cautiously watching us go about our daily business. Then, one day, he started hanging out in Lucas's room, and, at 5 a.m. when he got up for work, coming over for pets. He was gradually trusting us.
Morty is very protective of his little adopted brother. We decided to try to put a collar on him that identified his microchip number and our address. He had none of it! In fact, it freaked our little guy out so much that he regressed to feral shy and we had to start from scratch. He figured collars were such a bad idea, he started taking Jakkob's collar off, so we have had to reconcile ourselves to the fact that collars are just not going to fly in our house! I've found Jakkob's collar hidden in the strangest places.
With patience and love, he came back around with a vengeance. Now, my little guy sleeps with Jakkob on my bed, regularly nuzzles me in the morning for pets, eats out of my hand and plays like crazy! He's come around and knows that we have nothing but his best interests at heart. Amazingly enough, we recently had a guest with a dog visit and found him curled up on the couch beside the pup, not at all upset. He and Jakkob are brothers for life, and Jakkob's a much happier kitty to have his friend around. The two of them regularly wake us up with their rampages as they tear up and down the stairs chasing one another, and we often find them curled up together.
I cannot say enough about the counsellors at the MEOW Foundation. They truly keep to the promise to adopt the right cat to the right family. For someone who is patient enough, I would definitely recommend giving a shy cat a chance. I've had my Jakkob since he was a new kitten, so he's always trusted me but there is nothing quite like the reward of taking in a shy cat and the reward that comes from the trust they give you. I recently had a death in the family and subsequent bout of the flu and somehow, Morty sensed something was wrong. He gave me extra loves, and deigned to sleep curled up against my head, purring and letting me know everything was OK. Thank you, so much, for my guy. Here are some pictures of him in his new home for life. The next hurdle we have is his upcoming vet visit, but I've talked to my vet who is very understanding and we will find a way to work it out without stressing my new best friend.

Dear MEOW,
We are truly enjoying Chaplin's company very much since his arrival. He is now firmly established as our daughter's best friend and our son (who is autistic) finds him fascinating and will reach out to him and pet him. When ever Chaplin walks by, Matthew always has a smile on his face. That is more than we expected from him and its great to see. Everyone
has become very attached to him, including our nanny who often spends time in the day playing with him.
He is, as you know, quite a character and never fails to entertain us with his antics. One of his favorite pastimes is to sit by the window in a little chair and to watch the squirrels jump from branch to branch in front of our house ...
he spends lots of time talking to them and then re-enacting his dream-chase with a toy on our living room floor. He also likes the bed time routine, when he tries to get his share of my daughter's milk.
I think Chaplin is having a great time in his new home.
Cheers, Marie-Claude, Mark, Matthew and Meg |

Hello to all

My name is Sigmund (MEOW name Mr Juice) adopted Aug 17, 2005 . Just thought I would pass along some photos of me in my new home.
As you can see I am growing up big and fast! I am very strong due to my constant daily wrestle sessions with my cat companion Cosmo (MEOW name Vince adopted Aug 27, 2004 ).
Cosmo is a terrific “big brother” and helps look after me very well. We are always together whether it be to eat, play or curl up for those wonderful cat naps.
I also have a wonderful dog companion, Cicely, who helps in my care. She’s great to cuddle with on colder days.
Well that’s about all the news from me.
Thank you MEOW for being there and finding me such a loving home. All abandoned cats and kittens should be as lucky as I am!!
Yours truly,

Sigmund (MEOW name Mr Juice) |

Dear MEOW;
I wanted to thank you, once again, for everything you and the staff of the MEOW Foundation do for all the stray cats you look after. Your time and effort dedicated to such a cause is to be commended. I was so impressed by the entire process carried out in order for an adoption to take place: the application, the telephone interview, the meeting process, the 30 day trial period, and of course, the support phone calls. The Foundation obviously takes great care in determining where the best fit is ... for both the humans and the cats.
Bob and I wanted to give you an update on, and some pictures of, our sweet Towser. He has fully recovered from his worms. He also has a tremendous appetite and has turned into quite the muscle cat. While initially Midas could not stand to be in the same room as Towser, he has now taken to teaching Towser how to drink from the faucet in the bathtub and various sinks in the house. Towser also has "allowed" Kona Bear to lick his face, but only once at any one time! Any more than that ... look out.
The latest news has to do with the recent addition of two (yes, 2!) more kittens. A friend of a friend of a friend was moving and didn’t want her cats anymore, so I took them. Well it was instant love at first sight for Towser, especially with the real baby, Squirt. One of the pictures depicts the two of them sharing a small box together. He is so smitten with the little girl; he has become her protector.
Bob and I are so glad we persevered and got through the initial difficult time with Towse (his nick-name). He is so loveable and he follows me everywhere (and I do mean everywhere!). Thank you for all your advice and encouragement. We are so very grateful to have him in our lives.

Hi to Victoria and everyone at the foundation who knew Luella;
She says "Meow!" to you all and wants you to see her in her new home. She says the photos are bad and don't show her in her best light, like when she first sniffed noses with one of the DOGS ... but her owners are still in training ....
She is getting more comfortable here every day, and roams around freely. She is learning to tolerate the dogs one at a time, and loves to curl up on Kathleen's knobbly knees or back for some strange reason, every night. The bed usually contains 2 adults, one youngster and 2 cats, Pip and Luella, who seem to declare a truce when the lights go out. She is an acrobat when it comes to curling up for cuddles and will lie on a thin sliver of a ledge as long as it gets her up close.
She is still very tiny and lacking in much musculature. I think that as a result of her weakness she is very timid, but has no cause to fear, here. Sometimes the "boys" try to engage her in a romp but she's not interested in that yet. She uses the scratcher and is extremely clean. Hairballs are not quite so common now, so maybe it is nerves. She is SO loving with everyone and just blissfully content to have cuddles all day long. I've never met a sweeter, gentler soul, and we thank you as a family for giving her to us. We love her dearly.

Dear MEOW,
I don’t know why I fell in love with Cassius’ picture on the MEOW Website. He wasn’t even my type: a big, shy, 20 month old cat that looked like he was hiding a lot of Attitude beneath that shy exterior. He hid under a bed when we went to see him so our first look at him was down on all fours peering at him in the dark.
He came to live with us on a trial basis and spent 2 weeks hiding in the basement, not eating. After we coaxed him upstairs, he spent another week hiding under a bed. Gradually, he began eating, and moving around the house. He was very interested in our other cat, who wasn’t quite sure what to make of this giant “kitten”.
Since we adopted him on May 31, Cassy has turned into a most interesting cat. He still runs away if you approach him, but he comes when he’s called. He’s a vocal cat who meows and chirps when he wants something.
He checks out visitors in the hope of conning them into brushing him. He’d rather be brushed, than eat! He’s very animated when being brushed, but is careful not to scratch.
His coat is black and sleek and very beautiful. He will probably never be a lap cat, but he’s a lot of fun, and occasionally, he will jump on the bed in the middle of the night and cuddle up against our legs. When he’s happy, you can hear him purring throughout the house. We are so glad we took a chance with this shy cat. He’s a great addition to our family.

Dear MEOW,
I just wanted to write a quick note to let you know how our adopted kitty Finch (same MEOW name) is doing. Just over a year old now, you can see from his picture that he's developed into a very handsome boy.
We adopted Finch back in February to be a playmate to our other cat Kazi. At first it seemed that it might not work out with Finch. He was very nervous and upset about his new environment. He didn't seem interested in getting to know Kazi or us. We tempted him with treats and soft pets and after about three weeks he came out of his shell. He is now a very confident cat and struts around like he owns the place! I'm happy to report that he has become an excellent playmate and companion to Kazi. The two are inseparable and they always manage to get up to no good while charging around the house. Finch has also become a very affectionate lap kitty. He loves to cuddle and purr his contentment in your ear.
Not one to lie around all the time, Finch has assumed many important tasks since moving in. He is the official door greater and feels it necessary to inspect everyone's socks. He always examines the laundry pile (clean or dirty) and keeps close watch on any birds that may be in or around the yard. He also likes to maintain his good looks (and Kazi's) with constant grooming and healthy eating. One of his favorite things, besides Temptations, feather wands, and lots of cuddles, is to go out in the yard on his leash and harness. An expert fly catcher, he always comes running when he sees me grab his harness from the cupboard.
From his sweet personality to his happy little meow, Finch never ceases to put a smile on our face. It's been such a pleasure having him in our family. We would like to thank Caroline and all the people at the foundation for introducing us to our very special pet!
Sincerely,
Jenni & Jamie |

Hey MEOW, I adopted Caleb and Jonah almost 3 years ago.
I just thought I'd share some pictures so that you guys know that they're doing alright. I kept the same names that were given to them by the MEOW foundation, since they wouldn't respond to any other names.
Enjoy!

MEOW note – when Ernie was rescued and brought to MEOW he was a very unhappy cat who did not like anyone at first. He had infected eyes and was in pain. The true Ernie was still hidden under his gruff demeanor. With medications, consistent love and perseverance Ernie felt much better and changed his tune about the volunteers. But he never spoke at the shelter, not ever. Ernie is now truly at home, loved, and he has a voice!
Dear MEOW,
I just wanted to take a moment to let everyone know how our new boy Ernie is doing and to thank Victoria and Lori for all their help and understanding through the whole process with Ernie.
We had a very unfortunate experience with our last boy Kenyon as he met with a horrible accident. We had him for about one year and he was a lovable and wonderful addition to our small family. He was my best friend and I will miss him always, his pictures I still keep everywhere in our kitchen and on my desk at work. Both Kim and myself were heart broken after our loss of Kenyon and his playmate our very little girl "Mouse" was as sad and lonely as well. We wanted to find her a new friend to play with and ourselves a new boy to love.
After talking to Victoria I felt as if we could move forward with a new addition and "Ernie" was one of the boys we wanted to visit with. Well we are so happy that he liked us as much as we did him! He fit into our home very quickly as he and "Mouse" met face to face within 2 days. We were able to let them alone while we were at work within 6 days. We thought that was pretty amazing. Mouse didn't think it was love at first sight or anything, but she did give him the attitude of ‘I’ll put up with you if I must.’
We had our summer vacation booked prior to Ernie's trial adoption and we had Kim's family come and stay and baby-sit for the 5 days away. I have never not wanted to go away as bad as I didn't want to at that moment and his poor family had a file so thick with do's and dont's that I'm surprised they still love me. My worries were for nothing thank God, and we returned to all was well. Poor Ernie had to be on so much medication with his bum bite and then with the stress of a new environment he redeveloped an eye infection that required drops. I'm sure he didn't like us very much through that time.
I just wanted to report that all is going very well and he and Mouse are now the best of friends, she trusts the big gentle giant now and he seems to love hanging out with us as much as we love having him. He can talk on end forever, and he really hates a door being closed that he can't go through. That will sometimes get him howling until we distract him with his favourite toy the laser. I brush his thick coat every night as he needs it and it seems to be a routine he enjoys, his coat is coming along nicely.
I must say that we are so grateful with all that the MEOW Foundation has done for us and we appreciate the opportunity to give our love to another survivor. Both Kim and I appreciate all the attention that Lori gave to "Ernie" while in the care of "MEOW". Lori took an interest in him and saw how special that he was and is. She has a very special soul. Thank you Lori.
We will always have an affection for your foundation and will always support it in any way that we can.
Sincerely, Rene and Kim |

Dear MEOW,
Last October, little Benji (formerly Jethro) came into my heart and my home. Benji had a rough start, as he lived on the streets for the first nine months of his life. At MEOW, he was placed in the “Shy” category. He loved other cats but was very wary of people. And so, his next nine months were spent at the shelter. I like to think that Benji was waiting for me to come and take him home.
Benji stayed under my bed for the first few days. After that, he spent his days following my older cat, Jeffrey (who is 5), around and his nights sleeping beside me on the bed. Benji and Jeffrey have become great friends who play together several times each day.
It took Benji much, much longer to warm up to me. Although he slept with me from the beginning, it was a couple of weeks before I could pet him, several weeks before I could pick him up, and a few months before he would sit on my lap. And now, he is absolutely glued to me! Anytime I sit down for more than a few minutes, I am pretty much guaranteed to have Benji on my lap. Instead of sleeping beside me at night, he usually tries to sleep on my head on the side of my face (who needs to breathe?).
It is incredibly gratifying and heartwarming to take a shy cat into your home and watch him or her slowly progress over time. Every week, I was delighted at Benji’s progress. For my patience, I have been rewarded many times over.
Thank you MEOW,
Roxanne (and Jeffrey) |

Hello MEOW,
I wanted to send a couple of photos of our little baby "Junior" (MEOW name Joel). "Junior" joined our household on Boxing Day 2004. He promptly made himself at home.
Now, he flops on the floor and asks for belly rubs several times a day. He has grown by leaps and bounds and is almost as big as his big brother and companion Gary.
He loves to be in the backyard, and he learned very quickly that to go out he had to wear a harness and leash. Now we enjoy watching him chase bugs and leaves. He has thought once or twice about chasing a squirrel or two, but they are too quick and alert for him.
"Junior" has been a delight and we enjoy every moment that we have with him. We are very thankful to his rescuer that found him in that carwash and to his foster family. You can all rest assured that he has us trained to cater to his needs. For some reason he feels that he needs a treat each morning before we leave for work, and for some reason, we give it to him.
Thank you again!

Dear MEOW,
It has been one year since Puffer (MEOW name: Thing 2) and Meesha (MEOW name: Calico) joined our family. Initially we were thinking of adopting only one kitten, but we were sure glad we decided not to break up these two littermates; they have proven to be inseparable. Meesha and Puffer live with two older cats, Heffer (male, 15yrs) and Pudge (female, 11yrs), and after one year together, they have all grown closer and seem to appreciate each other's company. Especially when one of the cats has a hair ball or is feeling under the weather, the rest of them hover close by and usually one will come to bug mom or dad to let us know something's wrong. At home everyone seems to like their space, but in the car everyone wants to sit with (and on top of) Heffer, our most experienced traveler. Pudge, who is the dominant cat of the household, has taught Puffer and Meesha about acceptable behavior and manners and disciplines them when the rough play gets out of hand.
Puffer maintains his title as the busy-body of the family and his only purpose for sleeping and eating is for more energy. Mr. Curiosity is always on the go and demands the center of attention from mom and dad whenever we're home. He is very brave and is also quite the gymnast doing flips and acrobatics during playtime. He can jump five feet in the air from sitting and enjoys performing for guests. Puffer loves men with goatees and loves to lick and chew on dad's during cuddle time. Puffer likes to be the helper when it comes to household chores and his favorite chore is making the bed and playing under the sheets. He's also the official greeter and inspector for everything and everyone that enters the house. Puffer has given no indications that he'll be slowing down from kitten speed anytime soon and we're happy to let him bounce off the walls (and the ceiling) as long as he wants to.
Meesha has taken longer to adjust and we can't imagine how much harder the transition would have been for her without her best buddy Puffer. She had to wear a bell for the first month that she was with us because she was so quiet and shy we had trouble keeping track of her. Meesha has a red knitted cat toy that has become her security toy. She began having long squeaky conversations with "toy-toy" during the night and carries it around with her in her mouth everywhere she goes. (We even had to bring it on our holiday to the cabin!) It took about 4 months before she was comfortable and felt safe around us and she is still very wary of people she doesn't know. Squeaking is Meesha's way of letting us know that it's time to pick her up and cuddle, and she's demanding more attention for herself as time goes on.
We are so proud of her and we love seeing her come out of her shell more and more as she continues to grow.
Thanks MEOW for the great work that you do to give these guys a second chance.
Dean, Tara, Heffer, Pudge, Puffer & Meesha

Dear MEOW,
Here are some pictures of Tay Kitty C (Take It Easy) (MEOW Name Alpha). Well our life with Tay started off rough but it's definitely turning around.
She is a joy to have. Tay and her big brother Wuzzy get along great during play time which happens to be under the cover of darkness or at sun up.
Whoever says cats are quiet have never met these guys; they sound like a heard of elephants. But if she's not playin' she's purrin'. Not right now though. She's on the other side of the door to the computer room (only room cats aren't allowed in). By the sounds of it I think she's dying. I better go rescue her again, or maybe she's rescuing me?
Thank You

Hey Everyone,
How's it goin'? I have been living with my family for over four years now (Feb 2001) and couldn't be more happier. Well that darn Husky that came to live with us a year ago had put a damper on my space for a time but I have managed to put her in her place and she knows that I am, and always have been and always WILL BE the boss of the house. She did sympathize with me last spring when I had an 'owie' in my eye and couldn't see out of it for a time, but am now better.
I am treated like Royalty around here - because, well, I AM Royalty - even when I am being somewhat mischievous. As I am now starting to get on in years (10ish years old now) I tend to stay out of trouble more than get into trouble these days. But there is a gorgeous feline now living next door that is forever flirting with me through the kitchen window. She sure is a pretty girl and I would love to get to know her better. And speaking of other cats, we had a stray come to dinner one night in July of 2001 and he stayed with us until May 15th, 2004. That was the day we moved to our new house. Conquer ran off that day and even though we all searched for him for six to eight months, we never, ever did find him. I sure do miss him and wish he had come around. It's been over a year now and I don't think he'll be back. When he first came to us he was an active kitten and, with his help, I lost some weight. "Mom" says we sounded like a herd of elephants running up and down the steps in the middle of the night. Of course this is the best time of day to be doing this but Mom, Dad and the two teens don't seem to agree. But nonetheless this is when I am at my best. Sometimes I wish my family would get me another kitten to "raise" and they keep saying some day. I do wish that "some day" would happen soon. Sigh.
Anyway, I wanted to let you all know that I am doing very well here and this whole family are major supporters of the MEOW Foundation. I've gotten some really cool toys and stuff that have come from the MEOW Foundation like a cat bed and whatnot and we've had a calendar too. I think we'll be getting several calendars (2006) from the MEOW Foundation to give as Christmas gifts. MEOW Foundation is supported through Southland Crossing Safeway "We Care" by Mom and teenaged Sammy buying books from there all the time and throwing spare change in for your group.
Anyway, please keep doing all the hard work that you do. Many cats like myself wouldn't have done very well without this group. On behalf of my family and myself, I wish to thank you for saving me from the streets way back when and you guys (and all the cats you rescue) are in the family's prayers. Thank you again.
Sincerely,
Meiko Nederlof (formerly "Peter")

Dear MEOW,
I wanted to update you as it has been just about 3 months since Shafina came to her new home. Shafina is now known as Paris. When I saw this special girl for the first time, I knew she deserved to be spoiled and adored just like Paris Hilton!
It took a few weeks for Paris to settle in, but she now realizes the “mansion” is all hers! When I get home from work, she greets me by rolling over on her back and performs somersaults! She follows me around like a shadow – curious about everything, and has been absolutely well behaved from the start. She is such a sweetheart - I don’t know what I would do without her!
She loves to play with her toys – her favorite is the laser pointer and a feather wand in which she will leap, jump and flip up into the air to catch it as she thinks it is a bird! Paris loves to sit in the window sill and watch the rabbits, squirrels and birds. She also acts as my alarm clock – waking me up every morning at 6 a.m. for her morning breakfast!
Lastly, living up to her name, Paris is the biggest flirt and absolutely loves boys! She instantly jumps upon any male visitor’s lap and nests right in! She is also quite a social butterfly and has become quite the chatterbox! Paris is always excited to greet visitors and loves to talk about her day.
I am completely in love with Paris, she is perfect! I am so glad I was able to give a cat, an older cat, a second chance!
Your foundation is the best – thanks for everything!

Dear MEOW,
It has been three years already since I adopted Binky from the shelter and needless to say life is good for Binky (as it should be). As you can see by the first picture his coat has filled out and then some. In the winter he is a walking fur ball. Everyone who visits is always amazed at how friendly and loving he is. Within seconds of a guest arriving he is flopped over for a "Belly Rub". He is very persistent and will stay like this until you do his bidding.
Binky loves to talk and is very vocal when he thinks he needs food (which is all the time!). Needless to say he has packed on a few pounds over the years and is now the proud owner of a jelly belly. Bink's spends his days snoozing in his MEOW bed or any other soft spot that he fancies. I know it is a good cat nap when I can't hear the TV over his snoring.
Binky has added so much love and joy to my house and to my life, I can't imagine life with out him. Binky and I thank you for all of your hard work and devotion that you put into giving Binky a second chance at life and happiness. Every cat should be so lucky.

Dear MEOW,
Just a quick note and some pictures to let you know Rico (MEOW name: Brady) and Tiggie (MEOW name: Tiggie) are doing just great. They have fit in so well and they are the happiest cats alive! They just go around bumping us all of the time and purring like crazy. The kids adore them. Rico's antics are so funny and we laugh at him all of the time. Ciara is learning how to carry a cat and although she is awkward, Rico is very patient. He jumps on the girls' beds and to say good night when they go to sleep. Ciara had a sleep-over party a couple of weeks ago and Rico was right in the middle of a gaggle of noisy girls, pouncing on feet under the blankets and getting lots of love and attention. He seems to have lost any traces of skittishness and he is friendly with everyone who comes through the door. He has also become very vocal and he chatters and bleeps away at me all day long. He adores his outdoor play yard and he spends so much time out there. I still cannot believe he went so long before being adopted. My good luck guess. I guess he was just waiting to come home.
My Tiggie is a diamond amongst gems. Tiggie had been at the shelter for only a day when I saw her. There was something about her that kept drawing me back to the cage. She has the loveliest gentle eyes and the sweetest face, but it was her voice that did me in. It is such a funny little "meep"! I am so lucky to have her. Melissa is always petting her and saying that she is such a good girl. While she is very affectionate and loving, she is not obtrusive in any way. She is constantly happy. She is very comfortable here with us we talk to her all the time. I sure love Tiggie and I wouldn't trade her for the world! I have attached a couple of pictures of her. You know, I spent $1000 on that chair and I have never even sat in it! You know what they say about the best chair in the house! LOL!
Rico and Tiggie get along really well together although they don't really spend a lot of time cuddling and grooming each other. They seem mutually satisfied to be this way so I think they are a great pairing. Tiggie's feline sensibilities are often upset by Rico's general lack of grace. Last week he was walking on the basement ledge and knocked two pictures off. If cats could roll their eyes, I am sure Tiggie would have. Instead, she just gave him a disgusted look and blink and walked away. His general lack of balance has landed him in the bath with me more than once. Speaking of bathing, I saw Rico give Tiggie a bath and it was so funny. She was flopped over in a sun beam and he walked over, stood over her and washed her like mad for about 30 seconds and walked away. She looked kind of surprised like she had just been subjected to a hit and run washing! LOL!
Anyhow, I am sure you will be glad to hear Rico and Tiggie are doing wonderfully and we look forward to many happy years together.
Cheers,
Tracey |

Dear MEOW,
Today is my kittens’ first birthday so I wanted to share a thought or two with you about the wonderfulness of my girls and to let you know what they’ve been up to.
Katie (MEOW name Moxie) is my snuggle-puss. A bit of a roly-poly one to be sure. She’s a good 3 pounds heavier than her sister – about 12 pounds now. She doesn’t look like a kitten anymore and is, of course, is a very pretty cat. She’s the one who’s always ready for a cuddle. In fact, when I hear her meowing and purring at the same time that means she wants to be picked up and loved (sometimes in the middle of the night!). You were so right, Glenn, when you mentioned what a great personality she has. If she even suspects I’m reaching down to pet her she starts purring that wonderfully deep purr she has. Now that spring weather is here she loves to watch out the windows. There’s so much to see! Birds are fascinating and the recent rain storms too! They’ll both sit there for hours looking out of the front door. Katie’s favourite game is to crouch on the chair in the den catching the mice I throw her way. She’s got great reflexes. She’s also fond of the “find the mouse hidden under the rug” game.
Kolie (MEOW name Topo) is my goofball – such a lot of fun. Always ready to play and jump and explore. She’d be a very bored kitten without her sister around. Katie loves to chase her mice (or her sister) all around the house and to play fetch. She still finds that her tail sneaks up on her and has to be caught and is always looking for new cupboards to get into. She’s not super-cuddly but will frequently check in to get a quick pet before dashing off again and does occasionally curl up for a nap on my lap (like right now). She’s such a cutie-pie. Everyone loves their paws with their little white socks – my sister-in-law says that they must have dipped them in vanilla ice cream when they were tiny!
The best part is how wonderfully they get along with each other. Whether chasing each other or curling up for a nap or looking out the windows they’re not usually too far apart. They’re both such gentle, loving, beautiful cats and I treasure them both.
I was recently sent a very interesting website address which shows the relative human ages to actual animal ages. You may want to take a look. According to the chart my kittens are now 15 years old. Any minute now they’re going to want the keys to the car!!!! My brother’s family’s cat, Chedi, is now 18 - equivalent to 88 human years!

Dear MEOW,
We recently adopted little Frobisher. It is amazing how that little guy made himself at home. It is like he has always been with us. He is sleeping with Sasha and Paddy on the foot end of my bed. He has fast become buddies with all the other kitties in our family.
What really is wonderful is that Frobisher is very protective about Stevie who has neurological problems. He always is on my heels when Stevie is getting too worked up. He thinks Stevie may get hurt or something and he paws me, to show his protection. Frobisher is just a wonderful addition to our family.
Frobisher thanks everyone at the MEOW Foundation for finding him a new home.
Thank you for your tireless work for all the Felines out there.

Dear MEOW,
In November of 2002, my husband Andy and I welcomed our first human child into the world. Calla was, and is, such a wonderful blessing to us all. Our other three “kids,” Tonchi, Jack and Twingo, loved Calla. Calla was taught from day one to treat the cats with respect and gentle love. Our family of six seemed perfect.
When we had to put our thirteen year-old cat, Tonchi, to sleep in December 2002, I didn’t think that we’d ever adopt another cat. Yet as time went on and Calla grew, Andy and I started to feel as if there was a missing link in our family.
Having volunteered for MEOW for several years, and having adopted our last three cats from MEOW, we knew exactly where we would look to find our new addition. We went to the MEOW website to do some searching. Romie (formerly known as Romea) caught our eye immediately. She was the right age, and good with other cats and children. We immediately called MEOW to discuss meeting Romie. The helpful volunteer quickly got us in contact with Romie’s foster parent.
We made the long trip down south one Sunday afternoon, anxious to meet Romie. When we arrived, Romie was right in there, getting cuddles from Calla and not minding her following her every move. This was the meeting that we had dreamed about: a cat that we instantly fell in love with and who immediately warmed up to all three of us!
When Romie was delivered, she began to purr right away and chowed down on her food within minutes of being in her new room. Our instincts seemed to be right on, and Romie was fitting in very naturally.
It’s hard to believe that over six months have passed since we welcomed Romie into our family. Not a day goes by without me thanking those responsible for allowing Romie into our lives. Romie is Calla’s best pal. They’re in cahoots with each other all the time. One of Callas favorite phrases is “Ahhhhh, Romie, you’re so cute!”
Romie has been the perfect addition to our once-again family of six. She’s the cat we always dreamed of, and fills the hearts in this home, both human and feline, with so much love and joy. We look forward to many years shared with her and are so thankful for the work that MEOW does - without you, we’d be missing a link in our family. Thank you MEOW!

Dear MEOW,
I adopted a shy cat from your shelter back in December, and I thought I'd let you know about the amazing progress she's made. When we first got Mia (MEOW name Serafina) she hid beind the toilet in the corner because she was so scared. Eventually, we managed to get her into our spare room in the basement. We wanted her to have her own space for awhile and to feel comfortable in one room before letting her wander all over our house. Plus, we also had a not-so-shy cat - Merlot, who was dying to play with his new friend. Mia wasn't ready for attention from Merlot at first. So we spent hours each night with her, talking to her, trying to pet her and reassure her.
She used to sleep in her little box because it had a cover and I guess it made her feel safe. So Christa and I built her a little 'fort' for her to crawl into and sleep. She really loved that. We gradually started introducing Merlot to her, a few minutes at a time. He was so excited, trying to play with her, but she wanted to part in that. She was quite mean to him at first. After almost a week, we decided it was time to open the spare room door and let her wander as she pleased. She happily did so, but still wasn't impressed with Merlot's playful pouncing. She hissed and growled the whole way through that first night, and since then, she's been an angel.
She was still very jumpy, needed a bubble of personal space for her to feel safe. She enjoyed our company, but needed to keep a certain distance. So if we stepped forward, she'd step back. Or, she'd run to the step where she'd let us approach her to pet her. She loved being petted, but after a few minutes it would freak her out and she'd swat at us. It was clear she enjoyed it, I guess she was still unsure about us. So day by day, her bubble of personal space became smaller and smaller. And now, she's actually a lap cat!
As soon as I sit or lay down, she's on me, purring, meowing. She's very vocal, and loves attention. It took her until February to get up the courage to jump up onto my bed. And now, she sleeps with me at night time, and jumps on my bed waiting for me to pet her.
She's such a sweetie and I'm so happy that I decided to give her a chance. She's even friendly with strangers now. And will get up for a pet if it's on her terms. She's still not ready to be picked up, and wants to come to you on her own free will. And she just adores Merlot. They spend hours running around after one another. I am attaching a picture of the two of them in their cat condo that we bought for them. It makes them very happy. Merlot is on the top, and he's giving Mia a little kiss. ... Thank you meow for giving me the chance to have these wonderful cats.

Mooky on the left and Whispurr on the right |
May 20, 2005
Dear MEOW,
In November of 2004, we adopted a rambunctious little cat whom we named Whispurr. Whispurr was quick to adjust and soon had the run of our little home. With tonnes of energy to burn, Whispurr incessantly wanted to play, did not let us sleep at night and used our legs as wrestling mates. We quickly learned that our cat needed a cat!
We approached MEOW and learned of a friendly but shy cat called Willy who loved other cats but his desire for affection from other cats was not being reciprocated by the female cat in his foster home. Willy was once a stray and also wanted a feline playmate. We met him (or rather we met his little bum since that’s all we could see of him when we visited and heard a squeak of a meow) and decided that he’d make the best little brother for Whispurr.
When Willy was brought to our home we couldn’t stop Whispurr from trying to break him loose from the cat carrier! Whispurr wanted his playmate right now and Whispurr has never left his side since! Willy and Whispurr are a match made in heaven even if they can get in more trouble together than anything we ever imagined. They wrestle, chase, move furniture, hide jewelry and then fall asleep on our heads in bed. Because Willy has one of the most unique meows his name went from Wilburr to Mouse to Squeak but because one of them sounds like “moo” we now call him Mooky.

Dear MEOW,
I just wanted to let you know that Coco (MEOW name Anya) is doing great.
She's learned that our lovebird is off-limits and generally leaves him alone. She is a sweet, easygoing cat and we're very happy to have her.

(Editor's note: Every evening Coco and her humans sit in the living room while the lovebird gets his exercise and flies about. Coco has been trained that the lovebird is a fellow family member.)

Callie - MEOW name Chantelle |
April 21, 2005
Dear MEOW,
I just wanted to drop you a line of thanks for our precious new additions to our family. Callie "Chantelle" was the first to arrive on February 9th and she moved right in as though she was meant to be here. One day in her "room" was all she would tolerate. When she started trying to open the doors we decided she could venture a little further. By day three she had taken over the whole house and had us all wrapped around her beautiful paws.
She is quite the talkative little girl now that she is finally home. No longer the shy little girl we first adopted. She doesn't know what the word stranger means. She happily accepts attention from anyone that comes through the front door, almost ....
 |
|
Botticelli |
Easter Sunday Victoria delivered the very affectionate gentleman named Botticelli. Callie was not impressed. Botticelli didn't understand why she didn't want to just snuggle up with him like everyone else in the house. It took my sweet girl 2 weeks to just ignore him. Now however, she shares her food dishes and even her favourite MEOW bed. They've even started to play together.
I'll never be able to thank you enough for these two precious additions to the family.

Dear MEOW,
I just wanted to drop a line and tell you how great everything is with Ruth. She seems to have just fit in with our family as if she's always been there. Ruth is 100% everything we could have asked for in a cat. She's funny, affectionate, occasionally playful, and doesn't seem to mind being alone for a while when we're at work.
The first day we had her, I don't think she stopped purring for more than a couple of minutes. It may surprise you to hear that she is very vocal, giving little mews when she wants a bit of attention or food (or in the bathroom when someone is in the shower). She makes a lot of little noises, but they almost seem affectionate, not annoying or demanding.
Thanks again for everything. Our family appreciates everything you've done, and are doing.
Sincerely, Heather, Alan and Ruth |

Finn - MEOW name Findley |
April 17, 2005
Dear MEOW,
Well, it has been almost a year since I left the MEOW shelter after being born and raised on the streets, so I thought I’d write in and let you know how well I have adapted to the good life in my new home. Like any shy guy, I spent my first few weeks with my new human and her first cat, Katie (MEOW name Colleen), hiding under the bed and looking at everyone like they were carrying active explosives around. Eventually I realized the place was filled with love, food and toys and decided it would be acceptable as my permanent home.
I then proceeded to grow like a weed and am now a tall, slim guy (I prefer to refer to it as my “swimmer’s build”) who would play 24/7 if my family would allow it. There are two foster cats here (Cassius and Oleander) to reduce boredom and we all get along very well. It took me about six months to really come around to my human Mum, but once I did I was soon volunteering for long petting sessions. Now, a couple of times per day she picks me up and gives me what I believe is called “a hug.” I snuggle myself into her hair and purr loudly to show her that I really do appreciate the home she has given me. When it’s my time for cuddles, I can be very persistent.
My hobbies include weaving in and out of my Mum’s legs as she walks up the stairs and helping her obey the snooze bar on her alarm clock by playing with her feet through the bed covers. My guilty pleasure is playing volleyball with my cat litter but I am forgiven for that - my Mum looks good with a broom in her hand, anyway.
Thank you to everyone at MEOW who rescued me and took care of me and ensured I would have the opportunity to swap a sad life on the streets for cozy surfaces and catered meals. Hopefully I can be your poster boy for other people who can give a shy cat a second chance. If I can be changed by love, anyone can!
Love,
Finn (MEOW name Findley) |

Einstein, Mac and Newton |
March 18, 2005
Hi Everyone at MEOW;
Just wanted to let you know how happy our home is now that we have Newton (aka "Monster") (MEOW name, Peterbilt).
Life is interesting with Newton. We cannot keep anything on our counters - he loves to push things off, watch them fall and then bat them around!
He loves to chase his feline "brother" Edison around the house so much it has become Edison's new exercise regime & helped him to be much more fit & active.
... I don't think Newton had come across dogs in his life before yet he has adapted our two dogs to his life quite nicely! He has quickly become one of the family and loves to hang out with our young nieces & nephews and never tires of them. He also enjoys chasing mice - both the furry toys and the one on the computer screen!
Thank you for the great work you do at MEOW and thank you for rescuing one of our family members!!

Dear MEOW,
I received Kismet as a "shy" foster cat on February 14, 2004 . Never to rush into anything, this is Kismet’s guide on how to become a best friend – in just 10 months!
February and March, 2004 – Kismet was so shy, she hid under my bed all the time.
April, 2004 - I heard meows and later purrs when I stroked her with her wand.
May, June, 2004 - Kismet would let me stroke her with my hand and she enjoyed playing with the wand. She was starting to get very active and venturous by month number four. When I was away, there was evidence of her chasing mice and balls all over the apartment. Although she was shy when others came to visit and hid under the bed, she came out later to see who was there.
July, August, 2004 - In the summer she began to cuddle up with me on my recliner when I watched TV.
September, October - 2004 - Kismet was seeking more attention to be played with and being quite nosey with guests.
November, December, 2004 - By Christmas, Kismet was full of fun and mischief and so adorable that I adopted her. Since then, she's taken over my recliner, my bed and my apartment!! No longer "shy", Kismet has become a purr--fect cat.
Thank you MEOW volunteers for rescuing her.

Dear MEOW,
Thanks ... to all of you who made it possible for us to adopt the BEST orange cat EVER!!! Lewis (MEOW name Marmalade) has made our house his own little kingdom, outweighs Turbo, our other cat, by at least 6 pounds, and thinks the universe was created for him.
He is extremely affectionate and outgoing, although it takes him a while to get used to guests coming in the house.
Thanks again for all the excellent work your organization does.
(Note from MEOW: Marmalade (now Lewis) was rescued from a life with
almost no human contact. Look at him now! Comfortable, confident, loving
and a real pal to his family.) |

Tigre napping. |
February 20, 2005
Dear MEOW,
I’m writing to update you on my two MEOW cats, Tigre (MEOW name Christine) and Clove. Tigre’s been with me for more than a year, and, initially, she was lucky enough to have Fume, the MEOW cat in the other apartment in my building, to hang out with. But Fume’s family bought a house of their own this fall, and, without her big grey buddy, things got a bit boring for Tigre.
 |
|
Clove napping. |
So Clove joined our household a little over a month ago, and he’s been keeping it exciting for all of us (not in small part due to the fact that he and Tigre coincidentally are both grey cats with white feet – as Clove grows, it’s making it very difficult to tell exactly who’s up to what mischief). Clove is a "shy" cat, but, thanks to his quality time learning about the wonderful world of head scratches and belly rubs at Caroline’s, he decided to be shy for about a day, then proceeded to make himself very much comfortably at home. His latest discovery has been the bed. He was initially a little reluctant to jump up, but he realized last week that I can reliably be found there at night, making it an excellent place to demand nocturnal affection from a captive audience. He’s also finding that laps are extremely warm comfortable places to hang out, particularly since they’re so conveniently close to those lovely head-scratching, belly-rubbing hands. In fact, when I come home, I’m now greeted with much leg bumping and a string of meows until I sit down and give Clove the affection he regards as his due.
Tigre, for her part, is adapting well to Clove. Though he thinks people are great, his first love is other cats, and, though Tigre is the fearless and confident head of the household, she was initially pretty bewildered by the tiny fuzzy creature that kept trying to affectionately head-butt her.
|
|
Jo and Clove. |
In fact, Clove was having better luck with my new upstairs neighbour’s cat, Jo, a street cat my neighbour brought back to Canada from his time teaching ESL in Japan (Jo’s full name apparently means "parking lot" in Japanese, in honour of the locale where my neighbour rescued him). Jo’s a bit older and wasn’t nearly as panicked by all the head-butting action, though he did seem a bit worried that Clove might have adopted him as a surrogate mother, a role that doesn’t really suit Jo’s manly demeanour (because Jo’s a Japanese Bobtail, and Clove’s got a lovely stripy three-quarter-length tail, we thought that that might be the source of Clove’s feeling of kinship). But now the two have become hardcore wrestling buddies, which is great, since it seems to be helping with Jo’s weight loss regimen. Tigre’s also been trying to teach Clove to chase her. This involves her prancing by him on the tips of her toes, doing her signature dance, a routine that’s supposed to communicate "Come and get me! I’m delicious!" Clove initially would just amiably wander after her when she did this for him, but he’s coming to realize that it’s an invitation to try to catch her, and he’s been rising to the challenge, plus striking back with the occasional sneak wrestling attack.
 |
|
Fume - who's moved to his own house now. |
So a big thanks to everyone at MEOW, especially Caroline, for her fabulous work with Clove, and Victoria, for introducing me to Tigre and Clove. They’ve been wonderful additions to my household, and I couldn’t have hoped for a better pair of roommates!
Cheers,
Liz, Tigre and Clove |

Dear MEOW,
I just thought to give a quick update on Drake (MEOW name Ratatouille), and to enclose my favorite photo of him. Drake is officially a lap cat! Clipper was none to happy about that first and used to go and sulk and protest in his very loud Siamese meow. He then realized that his lap time with me was reduced alarmingly and now has decided to share is a perfectly good thing. Now, Clipper lies on my legs and Drake on my chest. They have grown even closer as they groom each other on a daily basis, still play with each other all the time, get into mischief on a regular basis, and frequently curl up together with me on the couch or in bed. I'm delighted that they get along so well and that I have two very contented and well loved cats!
This is one of my favourite photos of them. They do occasionally sleep like that. I love Clipper's (the cream coloured one) expression, a patient older brother having to deal with a younger brother and hoping he'll go away!
Enjoy!

Dear MEOW,
On August 21, 2004, Aysha (MEOW name Katlin) first came into our home. Within close to 24 hours, she adapted quickly to her room, and that day we knew that she was made to be in our home.
Over the months we've had her, she's developed some "bad" habits. Aysha will bite ankles in the morning until she is petted, and she learned how to take up as much room as possible on my bed.
Our cat Sox has warmed to her. Although he doesn't return her affection quite as readily, he has come to accept her antics and does his best to try and show Aysha her place in the house. Sox too has developed his fair share of bad habits since Aysha has come into the house, such as stealing Aysha's cat bed, and eating her food, but we love them both dearly.
And if you're wondering what the name Aysha means, it's "life" and she's full of it!

Dear MEOW,
It has been just over 3 months now since my adoption and I just thought that I would put paw to paper and let you know that I love my new home! Before my adoption I was very, very sick with a bad infection; however, MEOW wasn’t prepared to give up on me. As a last resort I had to have all of my teeth removed. At first I couldn’t eat hard food but now my gums have hardened so everything is okay. Some people have commented that I appear to have a big grin on my face and that’s because I do! If it wasn’t for MEOW and the generous people who support MEOW through their monetary donations, then I would not be here today.
My new Mum thinks I’m a bit quirky and finds me quite amusing. You see, I love to be chased, and I love my fur to be soaked with bathtub water bubbles. One of my favourite preoccupations, besides eating of course, is to chase the laser pointer light. If my Mum forgets to set the alarm clock in the morning, then I’ll walk into the bedroom and give out my loudest meow – it sure scares the daylights out of those sleepyheads! And whenever my Mum has to go to work she kindly leaves the radio on so I don’t get lonely. At the moment we are fostering a MEOW cat called Rims. Rims and I love nothing better but to curl up after our Sunday tuna brunch and listen to John Worthington and the Old-disc Jockey show on C.K.U.A. (We also like listening to Dave Ward.) If I see my Mum checking her e-mail, then I’ll ask her to go to the MEOW website. It gives me great pleasure to learn that another one of my feline friends has been adopted and found their forever home too. Thank you to all my friends at MEOW.
Love and purrs,
Thorfinn

Dear MEOW,
We would like to share some photos of Reno with everyone at MEOW. Reno is our feline pride and joy and I truly believe he was meant to be with us. Reno is loved very much and he is wonderful with the children. Reno went up on his own and sat on Kallie's chest purring and kneading. As you can see she is over the moon. Reno and his buddy Blaine have fun
together and no lack of toys to play with as you can see.

A note from MEOW: Reno's family has been excellent with his medication and eye drops. Because of their caring and diligence, Reno's eye has recovered and the vets think he will not lose it. Thank you from everyone at MEOW.

Dear MEOW:
My name is Jasmine, you will remember me as Jo Jo, and I am almost 8 months old. Thank you for rescuing me from the streets and sending me to live in a loving foster home with Lynne and Glenn. After being with them for awhile some nice people came to meet me and a few days later I went to live with them.
My adoption was finalized in December which made everyone very happy. In celebration of this event, my new people put up this huge tree in the house and hung all these cool toys all over it! The best part was the skirt they put at the bottom of the tree. It sure was fun to run and slide on the tile floor with it, and it provided the perfect spot to hide my toy mice.
I now have a new little sister to play with. Her name is Coco, you know her as Zelde, and she is still a baby. She came to live with us in December, and at first I wasn't too pleased to have to share my new home and people with her. But she soon had me playing chase and wrestling with her, so I guess she's fun to have around. And she is nice to cuddle up with when I am sleepy. I'm still kind of shy around strangers when they come to our house but Coco checks them out for me. If she gives me the all clear, then I come out to say hi.
Coco says she loves her new home too and aren't we lucky that MEOW gave us the chance to be adopted and live together as sisters.
Anyway ... just wanted to let you know Coco and I are both happy and are enjoying the life of true pampered felines. Thanks MEOW for finding us both a good home where there is always a welcoming lap to sleep on and lots of love to go around.
Sincerely, Jasmine (and Coco too)

Dear MEOW,
Here are a few pictures of my beauties - ok, so more than a few. When I come home, they are both at the door; Peony meowing softly her hellos, Bill rubbing his face on my leg. Once my shoes are off, they bolt off to the kitchen, awaiting the yummy wet food! Bill likes licking the spoon of any wet cat food that might happen to be left on there at mealtime.
Bill is the adventurous one: sleeping in the bathroom sink, playing in the bathtub, running around the house after Peony. They have a ball together!
At night, they both cuddle up on the bed for a little pre-sleep petting and purring. They make my life so much more complete. I love having them around - they are such a comedy show sometimes. Well, they are happy and healthy, and thanks to MEOW for keeping them for me until I came along.
Thanks again, Becky, Bill and Peony |

To Everyone at MEOW Foundation:
Over the past two years I have purchased a number of your
wonderful "cat" beds. Both of our cats (Scrapper and Willis) make good use of them. When we got an Irish Setter puppy in August, I took the time to make some polar fleece mats for him.
These were okay but Clancey soon discovered the cats special beds and would go to great lengths to pull them off chairs and drag them to his sleeping spot. At first he fit quite nicely in the beds but needless to say he has (at six months) outgrown them.
I came into the living room one day to see Clancey and Willis asleep in a bed on a chair. They woke up when I went to get the camera but stayed comfortable for this photo. Clancey continues to pull the beds off the chairs and goes to sleep "on" them. Perhaps you would consider branching out and making a larger version of your cat bed. Thank you for a terrific product.
Sincerely, Sharon, Clancey, Scrapper and Willis

Dear Foster Mom, and Adoption Lady :)
I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm doing pretty well here in my new place! These people are pretty nice, feeding me, and brushing me whenever I want, which admittedly is a lot! Uncle Matt lives here too, and he's great because he gives me catnip ... and I love catnip! I also love sitting at the windows in the house, and the couch is pretty comfy too! All in all, life is good ...
I'm doing my job, greeting at the door, and playing with bouncy balls, or more often pencils on the linoleum floor ... I think I keep everyone pretty entertained!
 |
|
Oskar finishes studying. |
Anyhow ... I just wanted to send you guys a little note, wishing you Merry Christmas, and letting you know I'm doing a-ok :) I even got my own stocking for Christmas ... mostly because I think everyone's glad I left the tree alone ... except of course for the odd sniff, and a bat or two at an ornament :)
I've enclosed a few pics ... We spend a lot of time studying here, so I've picked up a few habits ...

Dear MEOW,
Brutus here (Lilly doesn't talk much). You remember me as Christopher, but my new human and I agreed that I needed a name more fitting of my magnificence. You knew my best friend as Lizzie, but she's really honoured to be re-named after our human's grandmother, who we understand was a huge cat-lover.
We absolutely love it here! Lilly was shy at first, but after a few months of following me around, doing whatever I did, and sleeping wherever I slept, she has struck out on her own. She even sits in our human's lap for hours at a time, something a cat-on-the-go like me simply doesn't have time for. And even I have to admit that Lilly looks pretty goofy chasing the flashlight around the room - doesn't she know she can't catch it? Our human must be considering throwing out his alarm clock by now; Lilly wakes him up just as reliably and precisely, even on weekends!
I'm taking good care of my human as well. I enthusiastically greet him and all our visitors when they come in, and I make it my personal business to sit on anything that is placed on the floor: clothes, bags, paper and especially boxes!
I am so glad that we stayed together; what a tragedy it would have been to split us up! Here is a picture of Lilly and I enjoying our favourite pastime: looking out the window watching the birds and squirrels in the yard. Hey, we're just doing our job!
Our human is so thrilled to have found us, two of his friends have already adopted companions of their own! Thank you to Ed and everyone at MEOW Foundation for taking good care of us, and finding us a home!
