Dear MEOW 2009 (July-Dec)

MEOW cats and their families write in to tell us about their new lives together.

December 27, 2009

Dear MEOW,

We've had Del (MEOW name Delorme) for around two years, and Ember for around 1 year now. The two cats and I moved into a house in July, where they both get to torment the two dogs, and bask in the sunbeams by the windows. There are also more hands for petting, which both cats feel is a good thing!

Del enjoys going outside on his harness for some "freedom", such as it is! We've finally convinced him that winter time is NOT good outdoor weather, but he does know to go to the back door when we ask the dogs "outside?", since he gets to check the weather! He's the smartest cat I've ever met. Ember prefers to enjoy her retirement indoors napping or squawking for pets and plopping on the floor :) She also a fierce string-toy hunter, despite being an older kitty.

Both cats continue to be a joy. Thanks out to MEOW for giving the forgotten ones another chance.

Dear MEOW,

Just wanted to send an update on Kisu (MEOW name Norma Jean). About 5-6 months after adopting her, I moved to Scandinavia and had left her with a friend until I can bring her over (hopefully by the end of the summer). It had been 9 months since I had seen her and I made a specific point to come and visit her while I was in Canada over Christmas. It looks like she is being treated like the fat little princess she is, though she has had to ave her fur shaved due to matting.

I was worried that she would be mad at me for leaving her, but it looks like she been satisfied with her new home, because she was quite pleased to see me and get some attention. I didn't realise how much I had missed her until I saw her sitting on the bed - it was quite overwhelming. I can't wait until she's back with me!

Amy

Dear MEOW,

I have received my papers for Jackson (MEOW name Jackson Thomas) and wanted to thank you for blessing me with his adoption. My little girl (Scooter) is my 1 year old (just!) adopted from Pound Rescue a year ago, amputated front leg. They are best friends, it's almost like they know they have a common connection..My third, is camera shy! Jackson is still not walking on his back end, gets around by dragging himself. The only time he stands on his back end is when he is stretching. He's a big, furry love bunny! (not to mention spoiled rotten). Thanks to Kathy and the MEOW Foundation.

Dear MEOW

Little Sugar came into our lives quite unexpectedly one Sunday in November. See, we wanted to adopt her brother. She quickly stole the show though...lively, independent and such a beauty with two different coloured eyes and a heart-shaped birthmark on her nose.

My husband was the first to fall in love with her and as soon as I heard her little meow, I was all hers. We brought her home the very same day and began the process of integrating her with our first kitty...Tikko. Within days, they became friends and now they even take naps and watch TV together. She makes sure that Tikko gets all his exercise and he makes sure to keep an eye on her wherever she goes.

Sugar has brought all of us closer together, making us feel like more of a family than ever before. We love waking up a little early every morning to cuddle our babies before we head off to work and rush home afterwards to play with them.

She's our sweetie pie...our little girl...our Sugar :)

Dear MEOW

I adopted Rocky Kid and Cosmo in 2008. Brenda H. was the Adoption Coordinator who helped me with the adoptions. I was on the MEOW Foundation website this evening and noticed that Cosmo's mother and sister are still looking for homes. It occurred to me that their foster home would be interested in an update.

Jasper Ollie Jasper and Brother
Jasper relaxing, Ollie playing in the snow, Jasper cuddling up with his other brother

Ollie (MEOW name Rocky Kid) is doing well although, surprisingly, he is the shyer of the two. I thought his foster mom would like to know how far Jasper (MEOW name Cosmo) has come. He went from hiding and hissing to cuddly and outgoing. It took him a few months to decide to allow me to touch him, but once he did there was no looking back. The change for him happened after I had been away for two weeks. I came back from vacation and he decided to be a friendly cat. I decided to give him a new name to go along with his new personality - hence Jasper. I have included some photos of both of them. They are both wonderful cats, but Jasper is special and a real sweet heart.

Thanks for convincing me to take him.

Dear MEOW

My name is Amanda and my family and I adopted two kittens from you, named Koko and Xena (MEOW name Tatia). The two kittens are having a lot of fun at our home they play all the time. We love the kittens so much. We laugh and play all day long. These two kittens have brought a lot of happiness to our family. Blake and I with help from our dad picked these two kittens from the MEOW foundation web site.

I would like to thank all the helpers and volunteers who made this adoption possible.

Dear MEOW

My husband and I adopted a cute kitten last year, but was finalized in January. Scrappy (MEOW name Thor) is now 1 years old and crazy as can be. He took well to our clan of 3 cats, but is cautious about our dog.

I'm so happy with him. I couldn't have asked for anything more in a cat. He looks up to one of the others as a dad figure and another one as the big bro.

Thanks for letting us adopt him into our family.

Dear MEOW

I thought I would take a moment to let you know how great life has been for our two boys Kabeer (MEOW name Gouda) and Kiki (MEOW name Gruyere).

Since I had not been a cat owner before these two boys, I was unaware of what to expect as a new parent.
Here is what our boys have taught me.
- I did not know I would actually answer when a cat spoke to me.
- I did not realize I would almost instantly become 'staff', running to do the bidding of the cats at a moments notice
- I did not realize that having cats is, in fact, a form of therapy
- I no longer need to keep spare blankets for cold nights, as I eternally have at least one cat in my grill at all times

Kabeer Kiki
Kabeer and Kiki

The boys are happy, overweight, and bossy. This is apparently the exact plan that they had from the beginning, and luckily we came along to help further their cause. I could not imagine a day without them, and our kids regularly include the cats in our family plans for the future. 'Can the cats come to the trailer?' 'Will the cats be at the hotel for the tournament weekend?'

We can not thank you enough for the gift of our sweet yet demanding boys. They will celebrate their 2nd birthday in November, with cupcakes made by the kids and songs and catnip.

Kind Regards,
The Johnsons

Dear MEOW

It’s been about a year since Coco (MEOW name Bartie), Elvis (MEOW name Kanye), and Zurie (MEOW name Kathy-Lee) came home, and I thought you might like to know how they are doing and see a few photos.

Elvis, after the initial transition, made himself right at home. He is just a big goof; if he was human he would have a pocket protector and his pants up around his armpits. He always needs to know everything that is going on, is pretty darn smart and will head butt my fist on command or sit up on his haunches for Temptations. He is loves getting his ears scratched and his butt petted at the same time. He is the cat who can always be counted on to find me and jump on my lap for a looooooong cuddle and pet session.

Elvis Coco
Elvis and Coco

Coco was a little bit shy when she came home, she wouldn’t even let me pet her at the MEOW shelter. It’s been a long journey trying to earn her trust, but she has come so far and she continues to get braver each day. She is definitely a “Daddy’s girl”, she has her Dad wrapped around her little paw. She is well on her way to becoming a lap cat and is becoming quite cuddly. She loves having pet time and playing laser tag, and will dig through her toy basket to get her favorite pink mouse. I am so happy to see her being a happy cat. I had company last weekend for dinner, and Coco was the cat who came out to visit everyone, and charmed them all with her delicate way of taking her treats right out of their hands.

Zurie Poo Cat
Zurie and Poo Cat

Zurie came home a few months after Coco and Elvis. She is still a loner, although when she wants pets she will come and ask very politely. She loves to cuddle and be petted – on her terms of course – and will purr and lick and arch her pack and wave her little paw at me. She loves her some shrimp, and goes nuts over her catnip kick toy. She is slowly coming out of her shell, and Elvis is unwavering in his belief that someday she will be his BFF. Zurie is just so adorable and tiny, and is the cat who will let me pick her up and kiss her nose and bury my face in her fur.

I want to thank you, and everyone at MEOW, for rescuing my cats and for taking care of them until they came home. There was such a hollow feeling to my house when my beloved cat of 15 years died in April of 08, and while I still miss her, these new personalities have made my house a home again.

I am sending you a picture of the Poo-Cat as well. Gone, but never forgotten.

Many thanks,
Wendy & Brian

Harvey (MEOW Name Cannes) is a cutie, and getting big. Still very small but he's getting a little heavier.

Harvey Harvey and David

He's in love with my other cat. They're crazy about each other. They cuddle all the time and they like to groom each other. If David (my other cat) is cuddling with me, Harvey will push David's face so that he'll get all the attention. Its pretty cute.

Dear MEOW

We picked Oliver (MEOW Name Yang) a little over four years ago from your shelter and thought you might like and update. Oliver is doing great he is the most laid back tolerant cat in our house. His girl likes to make shirts for him and he lets her put them on him and will pose for pictures for her. He likes to sleep in the sun on the back of the couch with his face planted into the couch like Garfield (the cartoon).

Every morning at 5:00am he sits on my chest and puts his nose right up to mine to say it is breakfast time and he will let out a meow that lasts for 15 seconds and does not quit until he gets his food, he repeats this every evening starting at four pm for supper, which isn't until five. I had to stop free feeding him as he would eat until it was all gone and our vet was concerned with diabetes so in a year he has gone from being fifteen pounds to a nice healthy 10lbs. He is our little bug hunter when bugs get in the house he will run leap anywhere to catch them. The cats are allowed outside with us and only with their harnesses on and he likes to eat the grass and stalk the bugs and birds. He discovered that jumping onto a spruce tree is not a good thing.

Oliver, Harley, Miss Mollie 1 Oliver, Harley, Miss Mollie 3

He likes to lay on his back in my lap with all four legs spread and will reach with his front paws to grab my hand and place it on his belly to rub him and he likes to climb up on my shoulder for hugs. He tolerates Miss Molly (a stray found on Memorial Drive) who is all of five pounds and tackles him and chases him around the house.

Here are pictures of Oliver (white on chin) with Harley (the reason we got Oliver) and Miss Mollie (the girl with no fear). We thank you so very much for Oliver, he is definitely a character especially the way he snores and snorts when sleeping.

Dear MEOW

This is long overdue but I wanted to let you know how Arabella (MEOW Name Arabella) has been since she found her way into our lives April 21st 2008.

We kept the name Arabella because it suited her personality and we thought it was an amazing name. Arabella fits our home perfectly. She warmed up very quickly and it is obvious how much more comfortable she is now compared to a year ago. She is still the desk cat I was told she always was. I keep a MEOW bed on my desk for her to relax in. She loves to hang around her cat tunnel and on the deck. She also enjoys her cat grass.

We have spread the word of MEOW everywhere we go. Our family volunteers with the Airdrie Humane Society and people are fascinated with the idea of a Cat-Only adoption. Keep up doing the great work MEOW!

Dear MEOW

It's Jenna and Nate, with Olli (MEOW Name Taro) and Poppy (MEOW Name Yumi).

We thought you might like an update now that they are a few months old now! They are pretty much the same only bigger now. Poppy is definitely the ring leader, and the brains of the operation, but Olli is the muscle. They both are getting to be excellent jumpers, but haven't made it up to the kitchen counters yet.

Olli and Poppy

Olli loves everyone! He will follow us around everywhere we go when we are home. When Poppy gets really excited, like first thing in the morning when we wake up, she doesn't want to leave us. She will run though our feet and trip us up! But they are still best friends, and love each other more then ever.

Dear MEOW,

Hi, it’s Gracie (MEOW Name Gretel).

I have been in my forever home for a year now and thought I would let you know how great I am doing! After spending almost 3 years at the Shelter, I had a few challenges to face adjusting to living in a home. I spent 2 months in my safe room before I felt secure enough to come out. Then I had to adjust to all my new cat sisters and a dog. I have to say, in the beginning, I liked the dog way better than my cat sisters. It took another couple of months for me to figure out where I fit in.

Once I accomplished that, things have been great. I love all my sisters and we have so much fun together. Misty and Sophie (MEOW Name Checkers) are so much fun to run with. I have also discovered, if I stare at Emma (MEOW Name Eureka) long enough, she will chase me. I love that! Molly, our oldest sister, really enjoys just laying there watching us. I think we are very entertaining for her. Every so often, she will swat at us as we run by. Life is good!

Once I mastered sliding across the kitchen tiles, it took me 8 months to go into the family room. It is only 1 step up, but it was a very scary step for me. One day, I shocked everyone, and just walked right in! Once I went in, I jumped up into the chair with my mom. It was a real milestone for me. I have now become a “total lap cat” with my mom. She doesn’t even have to coax me anymore. Anywhere she is, I will jump up on her knee and go to sleep while she pets me. I LOVE snuggling with her and being petted. It makes me drool! I also love being brushed. As soon as the brush comes out, I am the first one in line. My coat is SO shiny and beautiful.

Gracie on Bed Gracie in Cat Bed

In the last couple of weeks, I have also accomplished another milestone. I ventured onto my mom and dad’s bed. I sleep there during the day with Emma now. Two nights in a row, I have slept at the bottom of the bed at my mom’s feet. Another big step forward for me!! My mom and dad love me so much. They never get mad at me, even when I play in the toilet water and roll in the bathtub after someone has had a shower. I really like water!

Thanks to all my friends at MEOW for taking such good care of me for so long. I hope all the kitties that have been there for a long time, get lucky enough to find their forever homes, so they can be as happy and as loved as I am. Bye for now.

Love Gracie

Dear MEOW,

It's hard to believe its been almost 5 years since we adopted Sarge and Charm from you - thought you'd might like to know how they've been doing. Well, it's taken quite a while, but Charm is finally getting to the point where we can pet him. He's actually jumping up on the bed or on the couch looking for pats and scratches under the chin and belly rubs (he LOVES his belly rubs). He still isn't too sure about us walking up to him to give him loves, but he's more than happy to come on his own terms to us for them!

Charm and Sarge

We're pretty proud of the progress he's made in just the past couple of months - he's really starting to become a lot more at ease. Ol' Sarge is still the same - except now there's a lot more to him - 22 pounds of him to be exact. He gave us quite a scare 2 years ago when he developed Feline Urinary Syndrome. Fortunately, his mom recognized that he wasn't himself and wasn't peeing normally so we took him to the vet where he spent 3 days getting flushed out. His recovery took a couple of months, but he's his old self again and we've taken precautions against either him or Charm from ever getting FUS again - they're both on a special diet with absolutely NO human food.

Aside from that, both our boys are doing great- they're both happy and healthy.

Thank You very much for our kitties
Blake and Karen

Dear MEOW,

I am just writing you to say thank you for this wonderful girl Bella (MEOW name Delicata).

Bella has not been with us for very long, but it feels like she has always been apart of our family. I originally came to MEOW looking for a companion cat for Fugi, my 3 year old cat who never grew up and Art his brother, coming from a larger cat group they could not adjust to being only 2 cats. Well Bella came into our lives and amazed me to no end.

As soon as I brought home this tiny girl she was determined her 2 new brothers would love her. She was going to have nothing to do with her safe room (literally ripping the carpet up to get out). It took her 3 days to win Fugi over and just a few weeks to win Art over. I have never had such an easy transition in my life. She has even privileged myself with jumping on the couch and setting her chin on my knee while I pet her. So now it has been a little over a month and Bella rules the roost.

Bella on Couch Bella and Art Bella

She follows Fugi everywhere and now Art plays with her ( I never thought that would happen!) She has learned to simply demand attention from me (like Fugi) and she shall receive loving pets as many as she wants. It is so funny to watch this tiny 6 pound cat run and attack Fugi who is a huge 16 pound cat. every morning and evening she is taunting both of her brothers to play and then settles in for a good bath with one of them.

This has been so much more than I ever expected, and I am so grateful to MEOW and Vicki for the determination and understanding of our families needs. You guys are so wonderful and thank you for putting this wonderful girl in our life.

Sincerely,
Heather

Dear MEOW

We thought we would give you a quick update on our boy Chauncey (MEOW Name McCoy).

It has been about a year since we were lucky enough to meet him and we couldn't love him more. He has quite the personality! He spends his day eating, sleeping, playing and more eating. He is a big boy now but the vet says he's still at an alright weight. He loves his older cat buddy Barkley and our lady of the house Kobe tolerates him as much as she can. Chauncey's favourite guy is our 65lb lab, Gizmo. He loves playing with Gizmo's toys, which is strange, and he will lay near him for a little nap when he's sleepy.

Chancey and Dog Chancey Lying

We were so fortunate to come to MEOW and have Chauncey choose us as his forever home. We are having a ball with our new addition and can't wait to come to MEOW again!

Thanks for everything you do for our feline friends.

Dear MEOW,

I thought I'd give you an update on our beautiful boy, Tayboryn, adopted from MEOW in April 2008.

Tayboryn’s first couple of weeks in his new home were spent mostly in our master bedroom and bathroom as he came to know my partner, Gerry, and I, as well as Spirit, our gentle collie-husky cross. The sink became his preferred bed for a while – it was the perfect size for curling up in, plus it provided some cover from which to survey his new digs!

Tayboryn in Bed Spirit and Tayboryn Tayborny
Tayboryn in his first ‘bed’, The brothers - Spirit and Tayboryn, Our beautiful boy!

Tayboryn has proven to be an affectionate and loving character, throwing out head butts generously and often. He is chatty and engaging, befriending everyone who comes in the door with his winning ways. He never leaves a warm chair unoccupied - one only has to get up for a moment for him to claim it for himself (and he’s patient, he’ll wait and watch for his opportunity). He likes to be wherever his Mom is, often following me from one room to another just to stay close and keep an eye on what I am doing. One of his favourite activities is ‘stomp the mouse’ – his favourite purple mouse gets its fair share of stomps from his back legs, intrepid hunter that he is! He’s constantly reminding me to stretch, stretch! I practice yoga regularly at home and he always makes a point of lying down beside me and showing me how it’s really done!

Much to his delight, he discovered that the morning sun shines ever-so-wonderfully in on the dining room table and wouldn’t you know that the place mats make lovely little sleeping mats…..until his Mom discovered this as well and took away the sleeping mats! ;)

He and Spirit quickly learned to co-habit peacefully together, once kitty figured out that the dog is mostly just a whole lot of fur and the dog figured out that the cat would do as he pleased in the house. They really are like brothers, one minute chummy, affectionate and sharing the same water bowl, and the next getting a swat in and chasing each other around the house! Tayboryn doesn’t share his love with other cats, however…he is quite territorial when it comes to his home and family!

Tayboryn is intrigued by light and shadows on the wall, bugs and water. In fact, he makes a point of hopping up on the rim of the tub when I am drawing water for a bath to watch the tub fill up and then hangs around to watch it drain later on. Alternately, he’ll stand on the edge of the tub when the shower is on to watch the drops run down the tiles and maybe lick a few of them, too. He has an intense curiosity about the world and I often think he sets a great example for how to see the wonder in the everyday. He constantly entertains me, makes me laugh and shares his cuddles. I always look forward to coming home and being greeted by him. I love him like crazy and am more myself now that he’s in my life than I was before he came.

Thank you to Brenda, our Adoption Coordinator, and to the wonderful work of the volunteers at MEOW who make happy endings possible for both cats and humans (and sometimes, dogs, too)!

Kind regards,
Angela, Gerry, Spirit & Tayboryn

Dear MEOW,

Shayna It's been nearly a year since Shayna chose us for her "forever" home. She is just a delight!

Sorry we haven't any photos of "Her Highness" as whenever we try and take a picture of her being beautiful, she jumps down and runs to check out the camera! One of these time, however, I'm going to outsmart her! She spends a lot of time on her perch in the living room, as the window opens onto a nicely scented planter box. There are always nice things to sit and sniff in the evening. The ironing board in the spare room has a good view of the garden as well.

I don't think we've called her Shayna since she came home. For some reason she got called "Sweetie Pie" or "Missy Mew" and seems to prefer those. When you call "Missy Mew, where are you?" you'll hear an answering "Meow?" as if she's asking what we want. Even with her little frozen ears, she's still beautiful; those green eyes are so expressive. When you blink a 'kitty kiss' in her direction, she'll blink one right back!

She's finally made peace with our son. She'd ignore him completely, and remain under our bed, but he spent a week here house-sitting, spoiled her rotten, and now she puts in an appearance as soon as he comes through the door. I think he taught her a few bad habits, as I had to reminder her that "No, you can't sit on the table while I'm having breakfast." He bribed her with "Greenies" which she just loves, and I guess it did the trick.

A cat's tail seems to have a mind of its own, twitching back and forth, but when she's having a cuddle and purr with Paul, that tail just calms right down as she gazes adoringly up at him. When she wants attention at night, she sits on the bedside table, puts her nose up against yours, and meows "Hey!" This means that she wants you to smooth out the blanket so she can get comfortable.

Thanks so much to Brenda for all her help in making Shayna's transition to her forever home with as little trauma as possible. I remember telling her that dogs have masters and cats have staff. Well her highness definitely rules, and we're a better family because of it. This might be a long letter, but I couldn't begin to tell you how much she's loved!

Best wishes,
Wendie and Paul K. and of course Her Royal Highness, Shayna aka "Sweetie Pie"

Dear MEOW,
Here is an update on Bob (MEOW Name Jolson) and Midnight Kit. As you can see from the photos, Bob and Midnight have become fast friends and love to wrestle and play together. When we first brought Bob home, he was nervous and easily frightened, but has come such a long way in these past weeks. The big test was when we had a houseful of company the other day. We expected that Bob would 'hide out' in the basement, but he surprised us by being very sociable and introducing himself to our guests. He stayed upstairs visiting the entire time they were here, and we were very proud of him! Bob is starting to fill out nicely and gets around just fine in spite of his arthritic hind leg.

Jolson and Midnight Kit Jolson and Midnight Kit Sleeping
Midnight Kit and Jolson hanging out and sleeping together

Midnight is just as sweet and cuddly as can be, and is our resident 'popcorn fiend'. He loves movie nights when he can wait till we're settled on the couch, then raid our popcorn bowl, batting bits of popcorn all over the place.

Both Bob and Midnight have become best buddies with Remy (MEOW Name Jairus) who was unavailable for the 'photo shoot' today. He has a favorite hiding spot somewhere that we haven't discovered yet, and quite often retires there when Midnight has wrestled him to exhaustion!

We love all three of our beautiful boys and are very thankful that MEOW works so hard to find these amazing friends 'forever' homes.

Sincerely,
The Jarvis Clan

Dear MEOW,

My husband and I adopted Molly (MEOW name Vanity) in Feb/March 2009.

What an amazing girl and we are soooo happy to have adopted this sweet kitty. It took a little bit of work getting Molly and our other cat "Sid" to adjust but overall it went very smoothly. They play all the time and Molly has really brought some happiness to Sid as he is much more active and playful now that he has a friend.

Molly and Sid Molly
Sid and Molly (left) and Molly ready for play (right)

Molly has changed in look so much since we got her. If you remember, Molly had more of a short / medium hair mostly in the tail. Well, she is one large fur ball!! She has gained weight and her fur is so healthy and fluffy. She LOVES to play and we have countless toys and a few scratch posts for them. I have attached some photos of Molly and of course our other cat Sid.

Thanks again,
Kathy

Dear MEOW,

We received Archie (MEOW name Deli ) and Otto (MEOW name Haya-Ji ) on December 29th, 2008 and it is going great!

The first night for Archie and Otto was an interesting night. Our master bedroom was set up as the safe-room and they both hid in their newly covered cat tower together for the entire first night. But, by January 1st, 2009 courageous Otto woke us up at 9am and demanded to be played with. Archie, the more timid cat, took a little longer to come out of his shell. But after a month in our bedroom they slowly ventured out into the rest of the house. Each day they seemed to find a new spot and by the end of the second month they were pretty much comfortable with my wife and I and their new home.

Archie and Otto on cat tree Archie and Otto on cat tree 2 Archie and Otto on cat tree 3
Archie (orange tabby) and Otto (brown tabby) buddies forever!

Otto's favourite spot is on the top of the cat tower. While there, he loves being petted and given tons of love and affection. He even likes kisses! Archie is more of our ground-level cat, but he enjoys being given affection too, AND they both love getting brushed daily. Each morning while we getting ready for work, the cats wrestle and chase each other around the house. They are buddies in every sense of the word.

When we get home from work, they like to greet us and spend the evening with us; unless there is something better to watch on CAT-TV out of our bedroom window. When guests knock on the door or ring the doorbell, the cats usually run quickly upstairs to hide under the bed, but they are slowly adjusting. The last few guests we had over, the cats came out and walking around in front of them.

They are adjusting extremely well and each week seems to bring forth a new breakthrough. Archie and Otto are glorious cats and wonderful pets. Enjoy the pictures and thank you again MEOW Foundation.

David and Krista
