Dear MEOW Supporters,

YellowpadMEOW has faced one of the most challenging summers yet in terms of the numbers of homeless mothers and kittens. We are receiving 3 or 4 calls every day. When you do the math this is approximately 20 mothers and kittens every day of every week for the last two months. Sadly, we do not have room for them all. Our message and our plea is very simple:

Adopt a Cat. Save a Life.
MEOW cannot rescue more cats and kittens without adoptions. Adopt from MEOW or other rescue organizations who are working for the betterment of animal welfare in Calgary. Do not support individuals, breeders or stores that give away or sell un-altered pets.

Thanks for listening and partnering with MEOW in the business of saving lives.

No Way! Home Depot is Not a Home??

Bewildered young Hedy was abandoned in the Beacon Hill shopping complex in NW Calgary. Why anyone would do this to any animal is sometimes beyond comprehension. As Hedy wandered from box store to box store in an area surrounded by coyote territory, she finally found a kind employee at Home Depot who took the time to notice and to feed Hedy. Many times people falsely believe that if you do not feed a stray cat, it will go away. This is probably true, but you are sentencing the cat to death by starvation. Be part of a caring and compassionate community. Open your heart. Thanks to Janice, Hedy’s guardian angel at Home Depot, Hedy has a second chance.

MEOW's Power the Purr Fundraising Campaign
Power the Purr MEOW Foundation Speaker’s Bureau will Assist Campaign
We received some excellent news this month. The Calgary Foundation has generously granted MEOW Foundation with some funding that will allow us to develop a Speaker’s Bureau. Members of this bureau will go out to various companies, service clubs and organizations to speak about MEOW – who we are, what we do and how we can make a difference in the community. These presentations will help lay a strong foundation and awareness for our fundraising campaign for our new Adoption Centre. The more people know about us and our services , the more they can foster, adopt and donate. Thank you to the Calgary Foundation!

The Fabulous Feline Faces of 2011
If you’re interested in sponsoring a month in our MEOW Foundation 2011 calendar, we still have a few months available. For only $250 you can have your company name, website and logo profiled in the calendar on a specific month. It’s a great way to promote your organization and help a wonderful cause. You can also dedicate a month to a special feline who is currently in your life or who has passed on. This allows you to honour that special kitty while helping others. Funds raised from the calendar will help both operations and the fundraising campaign.

Interested? Please contact kelly.hyde@meowfoundation.com as soon as possible.

MEOWza – The Art of Saving Lives
MEOW Foundation is 10 years old!
MEOWza
In celebration of this landmark anniversary, MEOW is planning a wonderful evening of celebration called MEOWza, The Art of Saving Lives. This fundraiser will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at the Calgary Aerospace Museum from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres, live entertainment and a silent art auction in support of MEOW.

We invite and welcome your support in helping MEOW solicit art donations for the silent auction in the following categories of: painting, photography, sculpture/pottery, tapestry/needlework, jewellery, textiles or gift certificates for artwork.

If you would like to personally donate art or approach a friend, acquaintance or a business to donate:
  1. Email meowza@meowfoundation.com
  2. List the artist or business you would like to approach so we can check our list and make sure only one contact is made.
  3. MEOW would like to provide you with our official donation request letter and the accompanying donor information form. Tell us if you would like these forms emailed to you or provide a mailing address. Tax receipts for fair market value will be issued for each donation.
  4. We would ask that all donated art be in very good condition as we are not able to provide the resources to re-mat or re-frame.
  5. Once an art donation has been confirmed, MEOW will contact you to arrange delivery or pick up as necessary.
We hope that you are as excited as we are about this milestone of feline celebration – 10 years of saving lives. Mark the date. We’d love to see you.

More information will soon be available on our website. Ticket sales start September 1, 2010.

Warm Regards and Our Thanks

SNAP Your Cat (Spay Neuter Assistance Program)
Each year and especially during the spring and summer, all rescue agencies are overwhelmed with phone calls for assistance for homeless cats and kittens. Imagine a home for every animal in our city. This may sound like a dream but this dream can come true with high volume, low cost spay and neuter programs for low income Calgarians. MEOW has provided this assistance to over 6000 cats since 2006.
Do you live in a residential area with many homeless cats, or do you know someone that needs assistance to spay or neuter their cat? Would you like a copy of our SNAP poster to put up at businesses in your area or to pass out in your immediate neighbourhood? Email: info@meowfoundation.com.

TNR Your Fearful Cats
MEOW also provides another very important program and service for Calgarians who are feeding fearful cats called TNR or Trap Neuter Return. MEOW assists with the spay or neuter, vaccines, identification and food and shelter as needed. Although fearful cats are not readily adoptable, they deserve our love, respect and compassion, plus the right to live out their lives in the communities they were born in, with their feline friends and families. The population growth is halted and they are lovingly cared for by their neighbourhood caregivers. If you are feeding fearful cats and are interested in TNR, please email: info@meowfoundation.com or leave a Voice Mail message: 403.230.6033. (Line 2)

Volunteer Spotlight
Kelly, her husband, Brian, daughter Carly (12 years of age), and 3 cats and pet dog are a vital Foster Family with MEOW Foundation. Caring for 5 Mom Cats and 26 kittens since March of 2009, this family has given their love and time for all those who have come their way. Kelly, Brian and Carly are willing to take on new challenges such as bottle feeding 2 week old kittens or devoting extra attention to help fearful cats overcome their shyness.

Foster Mom Kelly emphasizes that Carly and “Luna” (one of their own three cats) are an essential part of their Foster Family efforts. Carly’s imperative contribution includes cuddling and playing with the foster kittens which promotes better socialization, patience and love of younger people. Luna is also confident in her ability to socialize some of the shyer foster kittens. Ultimately the foster kittens’ capabilities for finding their forever homes are strengthened by this loving family. Thank-you Kelly, Brian and Carly!

Every Thursday night and Sunday morning you can find Cindy Wiebe at MEOW Foundation’s shelter. Well known for her reliability and thoroughness when it comes to cleaning, caring for and socializing the cats, Cindy has been an asset to MEOW Foundation since July, 2009. Cindy’s admiration and respect of each cat’s individuality is demonstrated through her determination to learn their names and assist the shyer cats with feeling comfortable around people. Cindy’s distinguishing approach at the shelter is that she engages in extensive conversations with the cats during cleaning routines. You may hear her ask a cat which blanket they would like to sleep on, or if they would mind if she cleaned the scratching post while they watch her. In addition, Cindy’s commitment is demonstrated by her written observations and updates of each cat’s progress in the shelter journals. Cindy is very fond of Chevy and in her words…… he (Chevy) has become a little lovebug! He loves to be petted and scratched! Just last week, he rolled over on his back and splayed open all four paws for a belly rub. Purring the entire time. Thanks Cindy! Cindy
