Board Position Profile - Treasurer

The Company

MEOW Foundation (“Make Each One Wanted”) is the only Calgary-wide no-kill registered charity that rescues and cares for stray and abandoned cats, matches rescued cats to suitable adopters and fosters, and provides Trap-Neuter-Return services.  MEOW creates healthier communities that support and value responsible and compassionate human-cat relationship and animal care.  Powered by volunteers and staff, MEOW has found permanent homes for almost 5,000 homeless cats since the year 2000. 

The Position

MEOW Foundation is looking to fulfill the position of Treasurer.  This position is part of the Board of Directors and is a part-time position. The successful candidate cares deeply about the welfare of cats, is passionate about the goals, mission, and vision of MEOW Foundation, and is looking for a sense of personal fulfillment in the area of animal welfare. 

This is an exciting opportunity to volunteer in a highly rewarding environment while setting the future direction of MEOW Foundation. Your involvement as an active Board Member will require a minimum commitment of two hours per week including, attending monthly Board meetings. The time commitment varies based on the needs of the organization. 

The Board of Directors is the legal authority for MEOW Foundation.  As a member of the Board, a Director acts in a position of trust and is responsible for the effective governance of the organization.  As a “working board” member, you will be involved in participating in the organization of executing MEOW Foundation’s three year strategic plan by ensuring the annual budget is current and balanced, as well as, establishing overall long and short-term goals, objectives and priorities, while leading volunteers and staff in implementing action plans. 

Treasurer 

  • Provide the annual budget to the Board of Directors
  • Participate in the annual budget planning process and ensure finances are handled in a responsible manner
  • Determine strategies for balancing the budget and work to determine the best operational strategy for MEOW Foundation
  • Ensure the financial policies and procedures are updated and best reflect MEOW Foundation’s mission, vision, and goals 
  • Analyze financial reports from the Controller and present key information to Board of Directors
  • Shared responsibility with the Controller for annual auditor review, tax return, and GST return 
  • Develop and maintain positive relations among the Board, staff, volunteers and community to enhance the MEOW Foundation’s mission

The Candidate

As a successful candidate, you will possess the following characteristics:

Education and Experience:

  • Professional accounting designation (CA, CMA, CGA)
  • A minimum of 10 years experience in a financial/accounting role 
  • Experience in managing or being on a Board for a not-for-profit organization

Key Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent organization and time management skills 
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint)
  • Ability to effectively interact and communicate at all levels
  • Effective problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated team development and leadership skills
  • A strong interest in the community and ethical practice 

Other Requirements:

  • Active membership in MEOW Foundation (an annual fee of $25.00)
  • Access to computer, Internet, telephone, printer and scanner

Human Resource Volunteer

Volunteer Profile:

enhancing the relationship between humans and felines? If so MEOW Foundation may have

We are currently recruiting experienced HR professionals who can make a positive and
lasting contribution to our organization. Be challenged to innovate and encouraged to apply

Committee Overview
This is an exciting opportunity to volunteer in a highly rewarding environment while setting
the future direction of MEOW Foundation. Your involvement will require a commitment of
five hours per month, which includes participation at Committee meetings.

The Human Resources Committee mandate includes: 

  • Develop and implement action plans to meet MEOW Foundation’s strategic objectives and organizational culture, reflect best practices and meet legislative standards
  • Communicate and ensure the organization’s mission, values and objectives are integrated within all human resources committee goals and practices
  • Coordinate the attraction, recruitment, orientation, training, total compensation, performance management, recognition and succession planning activities for the Board, staff and volunteer positions
  • Coordinate ongoing development and revision of MEOW Foundation’s Policies and Procedures Manual and Safety Policy Manual; ensure new policies and revisions are distributed to the Board, volunteers and staff
  • Oversee the effective administration of volunteer management data base
  • Prepare reports and analyze metrics and trends related to human resources programs and activities; make recommendations to the Board as required
  • Provide advice and guidance to supervisors for the effective management of volunteers and staff

Required Qualifications
  • Degree or Diploma in a human resources related field
  • CHRP Designation is an asset
  • Currently working in the field of human resources management, preferably within a generalist capacity
  • Experience implementing human resources action plans
  • Experience working in the not-for-profit sector is an asset
  • Dependable to follow-through on commitments and actions
  • Ability to remotely collaborate with other team members
  • Ability to commit at least five hours per month to committee meetings and execution of action plans

Cat Care - Shelter Cleaner

Length of Commitment:
Minimum 6 months

Purpose of Position:
To assist in maintaining an outstanding environment for the cats at the MEOW shelter

Responsibilities:
  • Cleaning cages; 
  • Feeding cats and replenishing water dishes; 
  • Changing bedding; 
  • Cleaning litter boxes and scratching posts; 
  • Sweeping and mopping floors; 
  • Providing TLC to cats

Qualifications:
  • A bility to lift 20 to 30 pounds;
  • Ability to adhere to cleaning and sanitary standards;
  • Ability to follow health and safety standards to ensure volunteer and cat safety;
  • Demonstrates love for cats while respecting their individual differences;
  • Demonstrates responsibility and reliability;
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment;
  • Demonstrates a high level of attention to detail;
  • Must be 1 8 years of age or older
 

Amount of Time Required:
2 to 3 hours per week

Schedule:
One shift per week starting at 9:00 a.m.
